Three teens were arrested after a high-speed chase ended in a PIT maneuver on Interstate 75 during Tuesday morning rush hour, troopers say.
Just before 8 a.m., a Florida Highway Patrol trooper was stationed on I-75 near Mile Marker 36, conducting speed enforcement, when he clocked a stolen Kia Sportage SUV going 107 miles per hour, according to Lt. Indiana Miranda, a spokesperson for the FHP.
Inside were three teenagers, a 17-year-old driver and two 15-year-old passengers.
When the trooper tried to pull the car over, the teens fled. The trooper tried to do a PIT maneuver, a technique that involves intentionally bumping into a fleeing car to get it to stop, but it didn’t work. He continued the chase and PIT maneuvered the car again, Miranda said. This time, it stopped, coming to final rest 4 miles from where the chase began in the grassy right shoulder of the highway at Mile Marker 32.
The Kia was reported stolen out of Collier County. Meanwhile, troopers found that the teens had a gun, multiple credit cards, and IDs belonging to other people.
All three were arrested on charges of possession of a stolen vehicle, fleeing and eluding, possession of ID cards and possession of a firearm. They were in the process of being taken to the juvenile detention center as of Tuesday morning.
