Tokayev proposed a new global mechanism to solve the water problem

Tengrinews.kz — President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has proposed a new global mechanism to address water issues, citing Akorda.
Speaking at the SCO Plus summit, the Head of State identified water security as one of the key priorities on the global agenda.

"Reliable access to water determines food, energy, and social stability, as well as economic development. However, global water management remains fragmented. While dozens of UN agencies deal with water issues, there is currently no universal intergovernmental organization with a comprehensive mandate. Therefore, Kazakhstan has initiated the creation of an International Water Organization under the auspices of the UN. Its task is not to duplicate existing mechanisms, but to coordinate efforts, ensure continuous intergovernmental dialogue, mobilize resources, and develop coordinated solutions. The SCO Water Problem Analysis Center could serve as a regional complement to this global initiative. I look forward to the support of SCO member states in establishing both the International Water Organization within the UN framework and the SCO Water Problem Analysis Center," the President of Kazakhstan said.

In conclusion, the Head of State emphasized that the Shanghai Cooperation Organization possesses every reason and capability to ensure the long-term and successful development of states across a vast portion of the Eurasian continent.

"It is our collective responsibility to establish the principles of equal and indivisible security, sovereign equality, and mutual respect as an integral part of international relations. I am confident that the Shanghai Organization will make a worthy contribution to building a safer and more sustainable world order, and Kazakhstan will work constructively with all SCO partner states specifically in this spirit and direction," Kassym-Jomart Tokayev concluded.

Earlier, the President stated that while criticism of the United Nations is largely justified, there remains no alternative to the UN in the world. The Head of State called for strengthening the organization's effectiveness and emphasized its key role in the international system.
