Kazakhstani scientists have developed a new potato variety
Tengrinews.kz — Kazakhstani scientists have developed a new potato variety named "Aitkhozhin," according to the Ministry of Science and Higher Education.
The new domestic potato variety, "Aitkhozhin," was developed in Kazakhstan. According to researchers, it is characterized by high yields and resistance to several diseases.
The new variety is the result of a collaborative effort between specialists from the Kazakh Research Institute of Fruit and Vegetable Growing and the Murat Aitkhozhin Institute of Molecular Biology and Biochemistry.
The researchers were tasked with creating a potato that adapts well to Kazakhstan's soil and climatic conditions while maintaining high yields, disease resistance, and other characteristics vital to the agricultural sector.
In developing the variety, scientists employed both traditional breeding methods and modern biotechnological and molecular-genetic technologies.
The Ministry of Science indicated that the work was conducted under Budget Program 267, "Increasing the Accessibility of Education and Scientific Research," as well as a program-targeted funding project for 2024–2026.
The project aims to ensure the sustainable development of potato, vegetable, and melon farming in Kazakhstan through the application of breeding, seed production, biotechnology, and modern agricultural techniques.
Earlier, Vice Minister of Agriculture Azat Sultanov stated that despite abnormal heat and unstable weather, Kazakhstan will not face a shortage of domestic potatoes and other vegetables.
