Wawona residents still can’t go home as Yosemite fire rages

Residents of a tiny town in Yosemite National Park will have to wait even longer to return home. Evacuation orders for Wawona that were issued Saturday will remain in place as firefighters battle a week-old blaze in the park. The South Forks Fire, which has charred 5 square miles, is 10 percent contained. More than 520 firefighters and other staff are on the scene. On Saturday, the wildfire — fueled by dry underbrush — came within 1-1/2 miles of the community, fouling air quality and posing a threat to homes and other structures. The town’s population, roughly 1,000 to 2,000 people depending on the season, was evacuated as a precaution by fire officials.
