ECHR accepts complaints in cases of Armen Ashotyan and Artur Danielyan for preliminary proceedings
ArmInfo. The European Court of Human Rights has preliminary accepted complaints in the cases of the
deputy chairman of the Republican Party of Armenia Armen Ashotyan and the head of the Adekvad movement Arthur Danielyan. Lawyer Tigran Atanesyan received the corresponding notifications, which he reported
on the social network.
"This in practice means that after some time communication on these
cases - sending questions to the parties, will begin," he wrote.
Atanesyan clarified that these cases are Arthur Danielyan's complaint
about the illegal release of Speaker of the Armenian Parliament Alen
Simonyan from criminal liability (in the case of a well-known
incident) and Armen Ashotyan's complaint about his arrest by a court
that did not have authority (the Anti- Corruption Court was not
competent to consider pre-trial proceedings, including arrest).
"I hope that one day justice will prevail, and Alen Simonyan, and the
employees of S. Khachatryan (head of the Anti-Corruption Committee -
ed. note), who released him from responsibility, as well as
prosecutors and judges - S. Dadoyan, G. Hovhannisyan, A. Nahapetyan,
will be held accountable," Atanesyan noted.
On November 16, 2022, Armen Ashotyan was charged with abuse of office
and money laundering. A recognizance not to leave was chosen as a
preventive measure. On June 16, 2023, he was arrested for a period of
2 months (since then the preventive measure has been periodically
extended). According to law enforcement officers, the basis for the
arrest was a violation of a preventive measure - a written
undertaking not to leave the place. Ashotyan himself does not admit
guilt, and considers what is happening to be open and cynical
political persecution. In November 2023, lawyer Atanesyan announced
that he had appealed to the ECHR in Ashotyan's case and called on the
court to declare Ashotyan's arrest illegal. At the same time, he
asked the ECHR to apply an interim measure as an exception and oblige
the Armenian authorities to immediately release A. Ashotyan. Arthur
Danielyan was charged under article "hooliganism" in July 2020 after
an incident with then Deputy Speaker of the Armenian Parliament Alen
Simonyan. The Special Investigation Service stated that it would not
prosecute Simonyan.
