WBO#4 Kosuke Tomioka (11-4-1, 8 KOs), 112, barely retained his WBO Asia Pacific flyweight belt as he was held to a split draw (97-93, 94-96, 95-95) with former amateur titlist Shogo Tanaka (5-0-1, 3 KOs; amateur 60-5, 21 KO/RSCs), 112, over ten hard-fought rounds on Saturday in Tokyo, Japan. In earlier rounds Tanaka had the upper hand, utilizing his faster hands to the southpaw champ. But Tomioka occasionally fought back to connect with southpaw lefts to the onrushing challenger in the second half. This reporter saw it 96-94 for the more aggressive Tanaka. It was the curtain raiser of the “The Day” show featuring a sensational Inoue-Nakatani encounter.
