Why are we only looking at a possible Fleury trade?
I realize he's the bigger cap hit, but hear me out. Fleury had his best year in GAA and tied for his best in save percentage. He was fantastic and kept the team afloat while they were struggling.
Murray hasn't played a full season yet. He himself has shown he can get banged up. We aren't positive he can handle the workload/demand and play at such a high level. Are we sure that the future is now with him?
We have a limited time for Crosby/Malkin/Letang/Kessel left. Will banking everything on a 22 year old that hasn't handled a full workload jeopardize the remaining peak years of these players?
What about looking at potential suitors for....Murray? With such a low-cap hit, a number of teams would jump at a young franchise goalie. Think about the potential offers for him...would Toronto throw their #1 pick at us for him?
The key question to this is what does the organization think of Jarry? Is he a potential franchise goalie? Do they view him as being as good as Murray? If they view him as such, we could easily go with Fleury for another 3 years or so as we get Jarry ready.
I know Murray did well for the role he was in and won us a Stanley Cup. But he showed a bit of inconsistency as well, letting some soft goals in. Wouldn't it be better to explore the options for both players? It's assumed that Fleury is a quality starter already - that's why we're wanting such a steep price - so why not explore keeping him?
