NATO Special Representative: Cooperation with Armenia will continue at the highest level
ArmInfo. NATO's cooperation with Armenia will continue at the highest level. Such a view was expressed by James Appathurai, Special Representative of the NATO Secretary General in the South Caucasus and Central Asia, speaking at the round table "Armenia-NATO Cooperation: Current Stage and Future Prospects".
"We understand the geopolitical difficulties Armenia faces, and we understand that the neighborhood of the country is not as easy as, say, Canada." In this light, Yerevan's balanced position is clear to us in many issues, including security. We see no problems in a joint Armenian-Russian group, Armenia's membership in the CSTO," he said.
The national interests of Armenia dictate all these decisions and priorities and NATO sees no problems in this, according to Appathurai. The Special Representative of the Secretary General of the Alliance does not see any threats to the existing cooperation of Armenia with NATO. According to his forecasts, such threats are not expected in the future.
"Of course, we see a lot and understand that, for example, the joint military exercises initiated by Russia are directed against us, while NATO does not have a counterbalance at the regional level, and nevertheless, in Brussels they perfectly understand the geopolitical importance of the South Caucasus. In this light, I would like to remind you that Armenia is the only CSTO country that participates in the NATO peacekeeping mission, I think that this is quite an important signal, which is indicative of many things," Appathurai summed up.
