Agramunt deceived hopes of his colleagues and did not submit resignation from post of PACE President
ArmInfo. The head of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Pedro Agramunt, did not appear today at a meeting of the PACE Bureau, at which the
question of his impeachment was to be discussed.
As Samvel Farmanyan, a member of the Armenian delegation to PACE,
told ArmInfo, the first point in the decision on the de facto
impeachment of Agramunt is the announcement of political mistrust.
The second point, he said, is that Agramunt lost confidence in all
political factions of the Assembly. According to the third point, he
is deprived of any opportunity to represent PACE in any way, or to
make any visit, to attend any meeting, or to speak on behalf of the
PACE.
The last paragraph reads: "We the European People's Party adopted a
political decision in the current situation to hold a meeting in
Prague on May 14 in order to determine the fate of Agramunt who
imagines himself to be Saddam Hussein and Muhammad Qaddafi, as well
as our further steps in this regard".
He noted that one thing is obvious that if Pedro Agramunt continues
to persist and does not submit a resignation, continuing to cast a
shadow over the entire organization and on the EPP, of which he is a
member, then these structures will be required to remove him from
office. "In the corridors of the PACE now there is an "initiative"
for lack of a better option, to persuade the Pedro Agramunt family
that they do not take him back to Spain," Samvel Farmanyan said.
According to the deputy, the behavior of Agramunt is a political
disgrace, casting a shadow on the reputation of the PACE and the EPP.
"Before the emergency meeting of the EPP political group takes place
in Brussels, the European EPP meeting will be held in Brussels, which
will also discuss the behavior of Agramunt," Farmanyan said.
To note, the reason for the impeachment of Agramunt was his visit to
Syria as part of the Russian delegation. European parliamentarians
accused him of complicity with the presidents of Russia and Syria,
Vladimir Putin and Bashar Assad. Despite the fact that Agramunt
repented of the deed and asked for forgiveness, this did not soften
the position of his colleagues.
Earlier, Agramunt was accused of corruption scandal involving
Azerbaijani MPs. According to the materials leaked to the European
media, Agramunt received bribes from the Azerbaijani establishment
for many years to lobby the interests of Baku in the PACE.
