EU institutions, chancellor Merkel's spokesman and some EU leaders rebuke German politician's statements that TTIP negotiations have "failed".

Spanish socialist leader Pedro Sanchez has said he will oppose Mariano Rajoy's bid to be installed as prime minister in a parliamentary vote on Wednesday. Caretaker PM Rajoy said he would risk the vote even though his centre-right People's Party and its allies are six deputies short of a majority, with 170. Some commentators had urged the socialists, with 85 deputies, to abstain to break eight months of deadlock.

Greek prime minister Alexis Tsipras has used a TV interview to make demands of Greece's creditors. Separately, he accused other EU leaders of “sleepwalking towards a cliff” by sticking to austerity policies.

Migration pressure on Europe "remains immense", the head of the EU border agency Frontex has said. Fabrice Leggeri told Germany's Die Welt migration was being driven by poverty and conflicts, particularly with the Islamic State militant group in the Middle East and North Africa. He said he had "no hint" that Turkey was sending more refugees to the EU because of tensions between Turkish authorities and Europeans.

A law banning the burkini in France would be "unconstitutional and ineffective" and would "create antagonism and irreparable tensions", interior minister Bernard Cazeneuve said on Sunday. He spoke after France's highest administrative court on Friday suspended a ban of the full-body swimsuit in one of the 26 towns that introduced the ban. Several right-wing leaders, including former president Nicolas Sarkozy, have called for a national ban.

Italian coastguards rescued 1,100 people trying to cross the Mediterranean from Libya in 11 different rescue operations on Sunday. Last Friday the International Organisation for Migration said that some 105,342 migrants had reached Italy by boat this year. It said that 2,726 died while trying to cross. In the same period 162,730 people arrived in Greece, and 386 died on their way.
