Google Launches Gemini ‘Switching’ Tools to Import ChatGPT, Claude Data
Google is officially rolling out new “switching tools” designed to help users move their digital lives from competitors like ChatGPT and Claude directly into Gemini.
“Moving to Gemini just got incredibly simple. Bring your memories, preferences and chat history from other AI apps to Gemini, so you can pick up right where you left off without starting over,” Maryam Sanglaji, Group Product Manager for the Gemini App, wrote in a blog post.
The update introduces a two-pronged approach to migration. The first is a Memory Import feature. Instead of re-explaining your job, your hobbies, or your family tree to a new assistant, Gemini provides a specific prompt for you to copy and paste into your current AI.
Once the rival AI generates a summary of what it knows about you, you simply paste that text back into Gemini’s settings.
“Instead of starting over from scratch, you can quickly get Gemini up to speed on what matters most to you,” Sanglaji wrote.
This “memory” allows the AI to stay consistent with your established preferences, such as your writing style or specific life details you’ve previously shared elsewhere.
For those who don’t want to lose years of specific conversations, Google is also enabling Full Chat History imports. Users can now upload ZIP files of their data exports from other providers, up to 5GB, directly into Gemini.
Once uploaded, these conversations become searchable within the Gemini interface. To reflect this deeper integration of personal context, Google is also rebranding its “past chats” sidebar to simply be called “memory” over the coming weeks.
How to make the jump
The tools are appearing in the “Settings” menu for both free and paid consumer accounts. The process for the big two rivals looks like this:
- For ChatGPT: Users head to Settings > Data controls > Export data.
- For Claude: Users navigate to Settings > Privacy > Export data.
Once the data link arrives in your email, you can upload up to five ZIP files per day to Gemini. However, some users may need to wait a few days for their old provider to package the data for download.
While the rollout has begun globally, there is a significant geographical asterisk. Currently, these switching tools are not available to users in the UK, Switzerland, or the European Economic Area.
