ESPN Legend Dick Vitale Shares Sobering Health Update
While famous for the electric energy and iconic catchphrases he brings to college basketball broadcasts, legendary analyst Dick Vitale has also become a prominent figure in recent years for his openness regarding his personal health battles.
The 86-year-old sports analyst, who has successfully fought off several cancer diagnoses since 2021, provided a concerning health update in a recent statement to ESPN PR via USA Today.
Dick Vitale Shares Health Update
“While I feel great physically and sharp mentally, I heard from my doctors that the latest tests [which included a PET scan, then a CAT scan, and then two MRIs] showed some abnormalities,” Vitale explained.
“They are recommending some additional testing to determine next steps. I’m hoping for the best, and we will see what the roadmap looks like after an upcoming biopsy. As always, I plan to remain as active as ever and fight as hard as can be.”
Vitale noted earlier in his remarks that the testing process leaves him feeling like "a nervous wreck."
“The latest example is my scans last week,” he said. “The anxiousness you feel about the uncertainty is off the charts. You just never know what’s next, and it can be surprising or scary.”
Vitale also said he’s so grateful for “the amount of love and support” he’s received, “especially in recent years through my multiple health issues.”
Dick Vitale Previously Spoke About His Health
Vitale previously announced that he had been declared cancer-free by his medical team last year.
“I am ecstatic! I’m on cloud nine! [Dr. Rick Brow] said the bloodwork was perfect, and he also said four words you love to hear: ‘You’re cancer-free, baby!'” he said on X at the time. “Wow, I can’t believe it. I really am so excited. It brought me to tears when he delivered it, because as cancer patients, you know that call is nerve-racking time. It’s life-changing.”
The veteran ESPN analyst has a history of facing significant health challenges. His medical history involves a dual diagnosis of melanoma and lymphoma in 2021, which he overcame before dealing with vocal cord cancer starting in July 2023. Following these battles, Vitale revealed nearly a year later that cancer had been discovered in a lymph node in his neck.
Vitale spoke about his exercise and nutrition habits during a 2024 conversation with Men's Health.
“The first thing that I say to people battling cancer is to be as active as you can both physically and mentally. YOU HAVE TO FIGHT!” he explained. “Physically, like everything else in my life, I have a regular daily routine that includes exercise such as walking at a fast pace and lifting weights. Prior to my cancer battles that started a few years ago, I also played singles tennis three times a week. I actually miss that a lot, but six months of chemotherapy and radiation treatments have prevented me from continuing with the tennis.”
“As far as diet is concerned, I try to avoid eating red meat as much as possible and I start each day with cranberry juice and assorted fruits. I usually have a light lunch of soup or a sandwich. Dinner is my main meal. I love Italian food and sometimes it’s hard to avoid eating too much. I also try not to eat between meals.”
