Exiled Afghan journalists launch Nimroz TV in France
Exiled Afghan journalists launch Nimroz TV in France as media restrictions and pressure on independent reporting continue inside Afghanistan.
Exiled Afghan journalists have launched a new independent television network in France as restrictions on media and press freedom continue to tighten inside Afghanistan.
The new outlet, called Nimroz TV, announced on Thursday that it had officially started operations with a focus on covering Afghanistan, regional developments and international affairs.
In a statement, the network said it was founded by Afghan journalists in exile and would operate according to principles of independent journalism, freedom of expression and open access to information.
The channel said it aims to provide a platform for voices that have become increasingly marginalized under Afghanistan’s restrictive media environment.
Nimroz TV added that it currently distributes news, analysis and written reports through its website and social media channels while emphasizing cultural diversity, human rights and professional reporting standards.
Afghanistan’s media environment has sharply deteriorated since the Taliban returned to power in August 2021, with journalists facing arrests, intimidation, censorship and growing operational restrictions.
International rights organizations and the United Nations have repeatedly warned that media freedom in Afghanistan has significantly declined, while bans on broadcasting images of living beings have reportedly been implemented in many provinces.
RSF says Afghanistan remains among the world’s worst countries for press freedom, warning that independent media have faced severe restrictions, censorship and arrests since the Taliban returned to power in 2021.
Media watchdogs and rights groups say Afghan journalists continue to face intimidation, detention and pressure from Taliban authorities, while many outlets have closed and hundreds of reporters have fled the country.
