ST. MARTIN PARISH, La. (KLFY) -- St. Martin Parish community members showed up to the Breaux Bridge High School baseball parking lot to help donate blood for baseball player Kole Hebert as he continues his recovery.
On Jan. 6, Hebert and 19-year-old Kendrick James Alexander were handling a firearm when Alexander pointed the gun at Hebert and the firearm discharged, with the bullet hitting Hebert. Alexander has since been arrested and charged with aggravated battery while Hebert is recovering in a hospital paralyzed from the neck down.
Since the incident, the Hebert family has received a lot of support from the community including this blood drive.
"I am very happy that somebody organized this blood drive to help out his family to make sure that he was able to get all the care that he needs and then to help the family out with whatever financial burden they may have," said Fr. Garrett McIntyre with St. Bernard catholic church who showed up to donate.
Hebert's hairdresser Brooke Robin showed up as well and says she has never given blood before but is glad to help.
"I think it's a great cause. I have been wanting to give for a long time, so I guess here it is," Robin explained.
The two-day blood drive started on Tuesday where Breaux Bridge high students were able to donate, and on Wednesday the community was able to do their part. Every donation of blood is a direct credit to Hebert's medical bills.
"We have a good community to support the family, so I'm excited," said Robin.
Everyone News 10 spoke with who showed up to donate their blood says they are happy to help one of their own, considering the circumstances that took place.
