St. Landry officials react to the new congressional map
A new congressional map has placed St. Landry Parish in a new congressional district.
ST. LANDRY PARISH, La. (KLFY) -- A new congressional map has placed St. Landry Parish in a new congressional district.
With a new congressional map being released and all of St. Landry parish being moved to a new district, News 10 spoke with State Senator Gerald Boudreaux and State Representative Dustin Miller about their thoughts on the move.
"I thought it was a very historic move," said Boudreaux.
After a special session spanning five days, the Louisiana legislature passed the new congressional map placing all of St. Landry parish in District 6.
"The biggest positive is our community as a whole is one," said Miller.
In a statement from St. Landry Parish President Jessie Bellard, he spoke of the new district.
"We are happy the process is over, and we look forward to working with our new representative," said Bellard.
Having a new representative is an important detail for officials in the parish, as Miller said the parish had previously spent several years divided between multiple congressman; causing them to feel as though they weren't a priority.
"When you're divided that much, I mean you're on the tail end. You're not very important to those people, right," Miller explained.
With the entire parish now under the one district and represented by one congressman, Boudreaux and Miller say the key words moving forward will be unity and progress.
"This gives us that unity that's needed. It brings us all under one umbrella and gives us an opportunity to plan," said Boudreaux.
With all of St. Landry parish now standing together, the next congressman representing the parish will be determined in the November election.
