UL announces investigation into April 7 campus suicide based on social media post
The University of Louisiana at Lafayette Police Department is launching an investigation into the April 7 suicide of UL student Basil Brown based on a social media post, authorities said.
LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- The University of Louisiana at Lafayette Police Department is launching an investigation into the April 7 death of UL student Basil Brown based on a social media post, authorities said.
In an update dated today to a post on its Facebook page on April 8 announcing Brown's death at the Olivier Parking Garage — but not naming them or confirming it was suicide — the UL Police Department said it "investigates all accusations brought to our attention."
"Regarding this incident, the Police Department was informed of and provided with the social media post made by the individual involved after the incident occurred on April 7, 2024, at the Oliver [sic] Parking Garage," the post reads. "ULPD is currently investigating the allegations made on the social media post."
The post did not specify what the allegations were, or which social media post out of hundreds ULPD was referring to.
Since last week, students have come forward saying that the university is not doing enough to communicate to students what happened. Leading the charge is a social media account called UL Whistleblower, which promoted a protest on campus scheduled for Monday.
