London-listed Power Metal Resources has signed a diamond drilling contract with 100% Botswana citizen-owned Mindea Exploration and Drilling Services to carry out a planned programme of about 2 600 m of diamond drilling across an expected six drill holes at the Molopo Farms complex project, in southwestern Botswana, which is targeting a large-scale nickel/copper/platinum group element (PGE) discovery. Gold miner AngloGold Ashanti has appointed Gillian Doran CFO, with effect from January 1, 2023. Doran (45) joins AngloGold from Rio Tinto Group, where she is currently CFO Aluminium, based in Montreal, Canada.

Coal miner MC Mining’s share price on the JSE rose by 15% on the afternoon of August 30, after the company announced that it had determined a preferred development option for its Makhado hard coking coal project, which would lower the development costs and, therefore, the peak funding required. The company in April reported that a bankable feasibility study (BFS) for the fully licenced and shovel-ready project, in Limpopo, had been completed by independent mining industry consulting firm Minxcon.

JSE-listed Master Drilling had one of the best interim periods in its 36-year history in the six months ended June 30, with all business units having contributed positively to earnings, while healthy demand for drilling services continued globally. CEO Danie Pretorius tells Mining Weekly that the only persistent challenge experienced in the six months ended June 30 was that of shipping cost hikes, particularly in sea freight, coupled with shipping delays.

Junior mining and exploration company Diamcor Mining says in its management discussion and analysis for the quarter ended June 30 that, while progress continues to be made globally to reduce the impacts of the Covid-19 global pandemic, its focus during the period continued to be on managing costs and supply chain delays. Moreover, efforts also focused on increasing operational hours to pre-Covid-19 levels to sustain increased processing volumes for the long-term.

The Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) on Tuesday said that greater business investment in new technology and projects is essential to ensure Australia’s skilled workforce could drive higher wages and a stronger economy. In its latest Economic Series report, the MCA said that Australia needed economic reform to lift productivity if it is to unlock the growth potential across industries, adding that policy settings must enable rather than restrain the economy’s growth.

Russia's Rusal recommended its first dividend in five years on Tuesday - an interim payment of $0.02 a share - after reporting strong first-half financial results earlier in August. Rusal, the world's largest aluminium producer outside China, boosted its January-June core earnings by 37% to $1.8-billion amid higher aluminium prices.

Midtier precious metals miner Endeavour Silver lead director Rex McLennan has stepped into the position of chairperson to replace Bradford Cooke, who passed away last week. McLennan joined the company as an independent director in June 2007, appointed as chairperson of the audit committee. As an independent corporate director, he has chaired the audit committees of a number of publicly traded companies, and was appointed lead director for Endeavour in May 2021.

TSX-listed First Quantum will have until March 26 to make a A$12-million investment into the Mangaroon nickel/copper/platinum project, in Western Australia, to earn a 51% stake. ASX-listed Dreadnought Resources on Tuesday announced that First Quantum had exercised its earn-in option over the project over the base metal rights covering five tenements, with the Canadian firm able to withdraw from the earn-in requirement at any time during the earn-in phase.

Diversified miner Glencore has named the two winners of a programme to identify youth-owned initiatives focused on making a positive impact in their respective communities in South Africa. Youth social entrepreneur Thami Gazide owns a community gardening project in Mpumalanga and is planning to impact even more people through the support received from Glencore.

ASX-listed Energy Resources of Australia (ERA) has generated its final revenue from uranium sales during the half-year ended June, with the company selling 242 t of uranium during the period. Production at the Ranger mine, in the Northern Territory, ceased in January 2021, in accordance with the Ranger Authority, and ERA has been undertaking rehabilitation efforts since that time.

Communities around Rio Tinto's shuttered copper mine in Bougainville face a serious threat of flooding due to unstable mine infrastructure, an interim report commissioned by the mining company said on Monday. Due to the urgent nature of the threat, a rapid risk assessment will begin in coming weeks by global environmental firm Tetra Tech Coffey, which prepared the report, and will include on-ground inspection to verify the report's findings.

Australian mining giant BHP Group should “proactively advocate” for stronger climate policy, according to a new shareholder resolution lodged by an activist investor group. The resolution, lodged by the Australasian Centre for Corporate Responsibility and sponsored by at least 100 BHP shareholders, calls on the company to look beyond its own business activities and take an active role in promoting Australian government policies.

Copper miner Sandfire Resources has reported record sales revenue for the 2022 financial year, while also announcing positive results for a definitive feasibility study (DFS) into expansion plans at its Motheo copper project, in Botswana. Sandfire on Tuesday reported record sales revenues of A$922.7-million for the full year ended June, up from the A$609-million achieved in the previous corresponding period, with copper sales increasing from 65 689 t to 93 827 t.

Critical minerals miner Independence Group (IGO) has reported record underlying earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (Ebitda) on the back of a 34% increase in revenue for the full year ended June. During the 2022 financial year, IGO generated revenues of A$903-million, up from the A$672-million generated in the previous 12 months, with underlying Ebitda increasing from A$475-million to a record A$717-million in the same period.
