MMA writers: Where's the outrage?
Recently we had a flurry of stories by MMA writers slamming Anthony "Rumble" Johnson’s treatment of a female gym member after the placement of her yoga mat led to Johnson’s demeaning language aimed at the member’s appearance.
Meanwhile, Cris Cyborg’s situation has for years been largely ignored by the majority of MMA writers. It’s simply the epitome of hypocrisy; a double standard as wide as the Grand Canyon. Rumble Johnson story times 10.
It’s shamefully obvious that writers have a different set of standards where Dana White and Ronda Rousey are concerned.
It’s ironic that Ronda Rousey’s background is in Judo; a sport that emphasizes sportsmanship and humility as a fundamental teaching. Unfortunately, Ronda has turned a blind eye to those ancient traditions to instead embrace the behavior of one of America’s ugliest Americans, Dana White.
Not long ago, Rousey was flipping birds at her opponent, Meisha Tate with whom she refused a handshake after a championship fight. She has repeatedly been quoted in various media around the world for referring to Cris Cyborg as an "it." Dana’s response? He joins in the taunting, calling her "Wanderlei Silva in a dress."
So where's the outrage, writers? The majority of MMA writers remain silent; undoubtedly over concerns of retaliation by the UFC. As for many MMA fans - they cheer.
Unfortunately there's a disappointing segment of bigots among the trailer trash crowd who are ignorant to things like respect and professionalism. Sadly, this country must tolerate this segment of an entire generation; young people like Ronda, who follow Dana White’s example of trying to prove that being rude and vulgar is somehow unique and cool. One need look no further than many MMA website postings to corroborate this truth.
Now it seems that Ronda has been ill advised to use a 5 year old drug test as a weapon to assassinate the character of her opponent in the press, while using her fame and popularity to do it. Not a very smart or sporting position to take. Make no mistake, her numerous public statements are not only unfair; they are economically injurious to Cris Cyborg by insinuating a current use of steroids.
Their remarks are the cornerstone of a case against the UFC for fostering hatred, bullying, slander, and discrimination. For all their wealth and power, these folks continue to show an amazing degree of ignorance. They have already lost to a much larger segment of the population, in the court of human decency.
To all those macho, manly men out there rationalizing that it’s part of the game – look no further than the recent (and current) litigation embroiling players in football and baseball involved in bullying, bigotry, and other forms of illegal hatred.
There’s big bucks at stake. Ronda and Dana’s ignorance has left them wide open for an excellent legal cause of action.
Dana White needs to step down. MMA writers need to step up!
