Chris Weidman was deemed unfit to contine by Dr. and needs to thank Dan Miragliotta.
order of events: 1 Ref stopped action on suspected foul. 2. Ref called for Doctor on seeing downed Fighters level of pain and distress. 3. Ref is informed the foul in question was in fact not a foul. 3. Doctor rules injured Fighter unable to continue. (There are no time limits on doctors rulings.) 4. The Ref declares the fight over. These facts should not be in question.
The questions should be: Was the foul intentional or not? This determines the limits of outcomes on a fight stoppage. (Easily determined by what some would call inappropriate communication between the Ref and outside the ring as confirmation a foul didn't occur validates there is no "IT" to be intentional.) and does the fight have go to the score cards or a technical draw (assuming without intent, there is no stoppage due to disqualification).
Weidman's only valid complaints are should that communication have been allowed. Why not? That the ref got the correct call and thus prevented an even bigger tragedy and missed call. All Weidman had to do was (if fit and able to continue) convince anyone he wanted to continue before the Doctor decided otherwise. The Doctor coming into the ring had nothing to do with whether or not the knees were fouls, but whether the fighter needed to be medically examined to continue.
Let me help. Dan, thanks for bailing me out, I was game, but those knees hurt me bad, I was about to take a royal butt stomping.
