ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- Several Capital Region BOCES high school districts will participate in the New York State SkillsUSA competition this month. The competition will give students a chance to showcase their abilities and demonstrate their trade skills.
SkillsUSA is April 24 to 27 at the New York State Fairgrounds in Syracuse, the state winners will participate in the national competition in June. Roughly 60 high school students will take part in the competition, all coming from Capital Region districts like Schenectady and Sharon Springs to Cobleskill-Richmondville and Watervliet.
Some of the trades include cosmetology, welding, culinary arts, global fashion, digital media, and more. Students often view the competition as a chance to meet like-minded people and enjoy the challenge of competing at a statewide level.
Kyle Dafeldecker attends the Building Trades program at the Schoharie Campus and intends to compete in the carpentry competition following his win at the regional event last month. "It’s a great opportunity to showcase my abilities and see how well I can compete against kids my age and to meet new people," he said.
