The Bulgarian Air Force reports that the main tasks set in its Action Plan for the previous 2018, have been successfully accomplished and the troops are capable of performing missions and operations. These are some of the main conclusions made during the Air Force’s annual analysis, which took place yesterday (21st January). During the analysis, emphasis was put on the necessary training, military personnel and the flight safety, learned BulgarianMilitary.com.

A flu epidemic has been declared in the Sliven region, effective as of January 23, in view of the increased flu and acute respiratory infections between January 14 and 20, the regional administration said. Planned surgeries, hospital visits as well as consultations for pregnant women and infants are suspended, along with preventive examinations and vaccinations.

Bulgaria’s national Ombudsperson Maya Manolova submitted a petition to the Petitions Committee in the European Parliament in Brussels on 22nd of January. The petition is against the double standard in foods and drink in the European Union. Manolova insists on a change in the European legislation, including in the Unfair Commercial Practices Directive.  Since yesterday mobile teams of the Ministry of Tourism have been monitoring what is happening with the coastal dunes, instead of waiting for the summer season, Minister Nikolina Angelkova told BTV in the morning. Bulgaria's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ekaterina Zaharieva met with Libya’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohammed Tahir Siala in Brussels to discuss the upcoming visit to Bulgaria of Libya's Prime Minister Fayez al-Sarraj, said the press office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The European Union has fined global credit card giant Mastercard 570 million euros ($647 million) for limiting competition between banks offering cheaper payment fees, reports AFP. 

Prime Minister Boyko Borissov has refused to participate in the World Economic Forum in the Swiss resort of Davos. He estimated there was no point in spending state money on a trip after the American leader Donald Trump did not attend the forum. Other world leaders refused to participate for various reasons.

We expect 2018 to be the most successful in the history of statistics in Bulgarian tourism with over 9 million tourist visits by foreigners. Prospects of enhancing cooperation in all political, economic, security and investment sectors between the UAE and Bulgaria were reviewed recently at a meeting between the Prime Minister of Bulgaria Boyko Borissov and the UAE Ambassador to Bulgaria Abdulwahab Nasser Al Najjar.

The Ministry of Justice is proposing measures to tighten control and prevent abuses in the granting of Bulgarian citizenship. In a press release, it said the draft amendments eliminate investment as a reason for granting Bulgarian citizenship, shorten deadlines, refine criteria and introduce a requirement for those applying for citizenship on the basis of origin to speak Bulgarian and to have a job and income in the country.

A 5-year-old child in Blagoevgrad died after flu symptoms quickly developed into pneumonia, chief national health inspector Dr. Angel Kunchev told Focus News Agency.

“At the moment I can only say that it was flu with pneumonia complications. Sometimes those complications are very swift and severe, [develop] within 24 to 48 hours, become incompatible with life, with severe respiratory failure, and it leads to death,” Dr. Kunchev said.

In Brussels, Bulgarian Minister of Foreign Affairs Ekaterina Zaharieva has met with Thai counterpart Don Pramudwinai, reported the Bulgarian National Television. The meeting took place in the framework of the EU-ASEAN ministerial meeting. 

The European Commission will warn that programs in some EU countries that allow rich foreigners to buy citizenship or residence can help organized crime groups from outside the EU to penetrate the bloc and increase the risk of money laundering, corruption and tax evasion, Reuters reported.
 
The warning is contained in a draft report, seen by the agency, expected to be published by the European Commission on Wednesday.
