The €35m Man Utd star 'hopeful' of contract extension, wants to stay at Old Trafford - report
Manchester United star Raphael Varane wants to prolong his stay at the club and is hopeful of a contract extension.
Varane’s contract expires in the summer of 2024, and he is eligible to sign a pre-contract agreement with foreign clubs in January.
According to Manchester Evening News, the centre-back wants to stay at United. He hopes the club will trigger the one-year extension in his contract.
Erik ten Hag denied any rift between him and the Frenchman after Harry Maguire was preferred over him.
Varane was left out for tactical reasons, with Ten Hag choosing Jonny Evans or Victor Lindelof to partner with Maguire.
Man United must keep Raphael Varane next season
Varane produced a stellar performance against Liverpool on Sunday.
The €35 million star was rock-solid at the back and deservingly won the Man of the Match accolade.
Liverpool dominated the ball possession, but Varane played a huge role in organising the defence well.
He was a vocal leader at the back, marshalling his troops to defend with a high line when possible.
He made 15 clearances and won all his aerial duels. In hindsight, it would have been impossible for Man United to keep a clean sheet if Varane had not been on the pitch against Liverpool.
The Frenchman is prone to injuries. This makes it challenging for the Red Devils to offer him a multiple-year contract.
Man United will likely sign a new centre-back in the winter or the summer transfer window.
However, keeping Varane for at least another year won’t be a bad decision at all.
The 30-year-old is retired from international football and could devote his time to the club.
Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez are two other solid options at the back. Having Varane alongside a potential new centre-back would add much-needed quality depth in the defence.
