Man Utd now want to sign 11-assist winger, £21.6m deal could be agreed
Manchester United are one of the clubs interested in landing the signature of Lyon winger Afonso Moreira during the summer transfer window, according to A Bola.
The Red Devils recently secured Champions League qualification after two years. The main priority will be on bolstering the midfield this summer, with Casemiro on his way out.
However, the club could also focus on adding more quality and depth in the final third. A young striker could be signed to compete with Benjamin Sesko if Joshua Zirkzee leaves.
A left-sided winger could be another priority for the club. Matheus Cunha is the regular in the role, but United need a quality backup with the extra workload next season.
Patrick Dorgu, who is primarily a left-back, has shown glimpses of his ability as a left winger, but the hierarchy may ideally want to sign a promising specialist for the role.
A Bola now claim that Moreira has emerged as a target for the Red Devils amid his immense progress at Lyon, whom he joined from Sporting CP less than 12 months ago.
Moreira has played a significant part in Lyon’s jump into the Ligue 1 Champions League places for the first time since 2019/2020, but the club could still sell him for a huge capital gain this summer.
Les Gones purchased the attacker for just £1.7 million, and could be permitted to leave for at least £21.6m. United are not alone in the pursuit, with Serie A and Bundesliga clubs monitoring him too.
Moreira would be a fantastic understudy to Cunha
The 21-year-old started the season as a regular substitute for Lyon, but has become an undisputed starter since. Despite a recent hamstring injury, he has continued to impress for the French outfit.
The youngster has registered eight goals and 11 assists from 35 appearances this term. He has primarily played from the left wing, but recently featured in a front two against Paris Saint-Germain.
Moreira caught the eye with a goal and an assist, which shows his big-game potential. He has also excelled with his defensive output, winning four duels and making three recoveries per game.
At £21.6m, he would represent a good understudy for Cunha. The lower valuation would help the club save funds to purchase a couple of marquee midfielders ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
The Red Devils obviously need to fill the void to be left by Casemiro. They could also recruit another top-class midfielder, considering Manuel Ugarte is likely to be shown the exit door this summer.
