“Clarity is important”: Michael Carrick sends strong message to INEOS over Man Utd future
Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick has admitted the time has come for clarity regarding his long-term future at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils are preparing for another crucial away test as they travel to face Sunderland in the Premier League this weekend.
Ahead of the encounter, Carrick was quizzed about the growing uncertainty surrounding his position at the club beyond this season.
He said in the pre-match press conference: “Listen, clarity is important. It is come the time of, at the end of the season where, I think we’ve finished strong, put ourselves in a good position, and obviously the situation of my role and what it looks like moving forward.
“I think it’s just the natural time.
“It was always spoken about towards the end of the season, if not the end of the season. So nothing has really changed, to be honest.”
INEOS likely to make decision soon
Carrick has guided United to victories against Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur during his 14-game spell.
His outstanding record is increasingly strengthening the case for INEOS to hand him the permanent managerial role.
The club hierarchy had set Champions League qualification as the target after replacing Ruben Amorim with Carrick earlier this year.
The former United midfielder has exceeded expectations by achieving that objective with three games still remaining.
Another factor that is working in Carrick’s favour is the limited availability of elite managerial alternatives.
Thomas Tuchel has committed his future to England, while Carlo Ancelotti is also expected to remain with Brazil.
Unless United can attract a truly world-class coach such as Luis Enrique, sticking with Carrick increasingly appears to be both the logical and the safest route forward.
