Students have set up encampments at universities in major Australian cities over the last two weeks to protest Israel's offensive in Gaza. Georgia has been engulfed by huge protests triggered by a proposed law that critics see as a threat to media freedom and the country’s aspirations to join the European Union. The trial in Massachusetts of a woman charged in the death of her Boston police officer boyfriend has started with a focus on the crime scene. Karen Read has been charged with second-degree murder and other charges in the 2022 death of Officer John O’Keefe. Testimony this week from several first responders has described interactions with Read, in which they say she made statements suggesting she was responsible for O’Keefe’s death. He was found unresponsive outside a Canton, Massachusetts, home. Read has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Police have arrested nearly 2,200 people during pro-Palestinian protests at college campuses across the United States in recent weeks. They have sometimes used riot gear, tactical vehicles and flash-bang devices to clear tent encampments and occupied buildings.
