Officer-involved shooting in Santa Fe leaves 1 dead
SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico state police are investigating a shooting by police that left one person dead in Santa Fe's downtown tourist district.
The state police agency announced Wednesday on Twitter that a person was killed in a shooting that involved the Santa Fe Police Department and that no officers were injured. No further details were available.
In the aftermath of the confrontation, a body lay on the ground behind temporary police barricades in front of a private chapel that is a popular tourist destination and located a few block from Santa Fe's central plaza.
Santa Fe police officers at the scene declined to answer questions about the events and an agency spokesman was not immediately available.
Nearby, the state Capitol Building was briefly locked down in response to shots fired in the area with public entrances close and staff and visitors encouraged to stay put.
