Police: School parking lot knife attack suspect in custody
SILVER SPRING, Md. (AP) — The suspect in a knife attack in a Maryland high school's parking lot has been taken into custody, police said.
Officers were called to Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring around 10 a.m. Monday for a report of a student who had been stabbed, Montgomery County police said in a news release. One student was taken to a hospital with injuries that weren't considered life-threatening and police said the suspect was taken into custody by mid-afternoon. Both are juveniles and students at the school, police said. Charges against the suspect are pending, police said Monday evening.
In an email to parents, Principal Renay Johnson wrote that one student brandished a knife then assaulted and cut a classmate, The Washington Post reported.
“The suspect left school grounds and was returned to school by the student’s parents and taken into custody by Montgomery County Police,” Johnson said in the email. The school was initially locked down, then shifted to a shelter-in-place status so the investigation could proceed while classes continued, she said.
