Earthquake death toll in western Turkey rises to 42
The death toll from the earthquake in western Turkey has risen to 42, the agency for emergency situations and natural disasters of the republic reported.
“A total of 42 of our citizens were killed, 1 of them died as a result of drowning,” the message says.
It is noted that as a result of the natural disaster, 886 were injured. 229 people are being treated. Search and rescue operations are ongoing in 9 buildings in Izmir.
Earlier it was reported about 35 deaths in the earthquake.
An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.6 occurred in the afternoon of October 30. The epicenter was in the Aegean Sea near the city of Seferihisar, Izmir province. In addition, the city of Izmir was the most affected by the disaster. After the natural disaster, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan arrived in the city. The tremors were felt by the inhabitants of the nearby islands belonging to Greece.
The earthquake also caused destruction on the Greek island of Samos, killing two people and injuring several dozen.
In connection with the earthquake, Russian President Vladimir Putin sent condolences to Recep Tayyip Erdogan, as well as to Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
