Germany’s plans to bypass sanctions against Nord Stream 2 revealed
The authorities of the German federal state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern are planning to create a “Climate Change Fund” to bypass the US sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 project. This is reported by Bild, citing sources.
In the future, the Fund will define the gas pipeline as “the most important element for environmental protection” and on this basis, every effort will be made to complete its construction. For this, Germany will create a commercial enterprise whose products and services will only be used to complete the project.
Thus, German companies threatened by US sanctions will be able to provide their services to Russia through the fund and its enterprise. Technically, no company will interact with the pipeline and will not be sanctioned.
Earlier, the operator of Nord Stream 2, Nord Stream 2, announced that it would continue construction of the gas pipeline in early December 2020. The pipes will be laid by a vessel with anchor positioning, but it is not yet known which pipe-layer is in question.
On November 29, the United States declared it incapable of stopping the construction of Nord Stream 2 with the help of sanctions. Despite the problems, the gas pipeline can still be completed by the summer of 2021 and all the necessary certificates for gas supplies can be obtained, according to a senior researcher at the Oxford Institute for Energy Research, Katya Yafimava.
At the end of 2019, the United States imposed sanctions on companies providing such vessels for the project, resulting in the withdrawal of the European company Allseas. Russia has its own vessel for completing the Akademik Chersky gas pipeline, which this week left the port of Mukran (the logistics base for the Nord Stream 2 project) and arrived in Kaliningrad, according to Marine Traffic data.
