Contrary to what reports from last year suggested, English Championship football club Hull City AFC won’t be getting acquired by cryptocurrency crowd funding platform SportyCo. According to sources familiar with the matter, SportyCo’s managing director, Marko Filej, met with the club’s owners and agreed on a price. However, after that price was disclosed to investors supporting SportyCo’s bid, the deal fizzled out to nothing. As Facebook continues to weather a string of legal battles and harsh criticism for its never-ending privacy disasters and a generally lackadaisical attitude towards consumer data, the social networking site kicked off its annual F8 annual developer conference at San Jose yesterday. Cryptocurrency thieves earned at least $356 million in the first quarter of 2019, which could see the industry face a billion-dollar money laundering problem by year’s end. Tether’s lawyer has now admitted that the stablecoin is only 74 percent backed by cash and equivalents, according to an affidavit filed on Tuesday. In the filing, Stuart Hoegner, the company’s general counsel, said Tether held approximately $2.1 billion in cash and short-term securities. “As of the date [April 30] I am signing this affidavit, Tether has cash and cash equivalents (short term securities) on hand totalling approximately $2.1 billion, representing approximately 74 percent of the current outstanding tethers,” said Hoegner. The US Attorney for the Southern District of New York has charged two people in connection with running an unlicensed money transfer business used to make deposits for cryptocurrency exchanges. Reginald Fowler and Ravid Yosef allegedly ran a shadow banking service that “processed hundreds of millions of dollars of unregulated transactions on behalf of cryptocurrency exchanges,” US Attorney Geoffrey Berman said in the announcement. Gone are the days when iPhones used to be the center stage of Apple’s quarterly results.
