Djurgarden sports coordinator Peter Kisfaludy has rubbished suggestions that Lucas Bergvall signed for Tottenham Hotspur over Barcelona due to financial reasons.
It has been well-documented that Spurs saw off competition from Barcelona to land Bergvall on deadline day in January (Sport).
There has been a lot written in Spanish press over the past couple of months about how Tottenham beat Barcelona to the player, with some outlets suggesting it was down to the Premier League side offering more money (Matteo Moretto).
In fact, some reports in Spain have even suggested that the Catalan club felt that the midfielder and his entourage simply used their interest to get a better offer from the Lilywhites (Sport).
Bergvall did not choose Tottenham for the money
However, Kisfaludy has now dismissed those claims, insisting that Bergvall’s representatives negotiated with both clubs in good faith.
He told Aftonbladet about the midfielder’s move: “He has taken everything very well. There has been so much rubbish on social media that he would have chosen Tottenham for the money. It’s total bull.
“The contracts with Barcelona and Tottenham were fully negotiated. Both for his own part and between the clubs, so that he could choose.”
Kisfaludy insisted that the 18-year-old got a good feeling about the idea of joining Spurs when he spoke to Ange Postecoglou in January.
The Djurgarden official added: “He got a better feeling and that is not so strange. When the coach Ange Postecoglou sits down with him and says that he loves young players and that he will get the chance there if he works hard. Compare that to Barcelona, where you didn’t even know who was going to coach the team.”
Spurs Web Opinion
The claims being made by the Catalan press about Bergvall come across as sour grapes. As Kisfaludy points out, it would have been a big gamble for the Swedish youngster to move to Barca without knowing who the club’s manager is going to be next season.
