Richard Keys has criticised Jamie Redknapp for brushing aside the incident involving James Maddison and Ryan Yates, accusing the pundit of having a conflict of interest due to his ties with the Tottenham midfielder.
The altercation between Yates and Maddison has dominated the headlines over the last couple of days, with many feeling that the Tottenham star was lucky not to be sent off.
Nuno Espirito Santo insisted that the 26-year-old had clearly punished his player and was puzzled why VAR did not intervene (Sky Sports) and the same opinion was shared by Wayne Rooney, who said that the 27-year-old’s intention was quite clear (Optus Sport).
However, both Roy Keane and Jamie Redknapp dismissed the incident out of hand, insisting that there was nothing in it and that Yates had gone down too easily (Sky Sports).
Jamie Redknapp accused of Spurs favouritism
Keys has now picked up on that comment, suggesting that Redknapp might have wanted to protect Maddison since the England international models for his clothing company.
The beIN Sports anchor said on his personal blog: “And was everybody in the bunker asleep when Maddison punched Ryan Yates off the ball at Spurs? It’s not so bad that Simon Hooper missed it – but it was as clear as day for VAR. Maddison should’ve been sent off.
“I’m told Jamie Redknapp didn’t want to make much of the incident on Sky. I wonder if that has anything to do with the fact that Maddison models for Redknapp’s clothing company? If that’s not a conflict of interest I don’t know what is.'”
Spurs Web Opinion
Keys is free to disagree with Redknapp’s opinion and one can certainly understand why the beIN Sports anchor feels that Maddison should have been sent off. However, I do not think it is fair to accuse Redknapp of favouritism towards the Tottenham man.
