Jamie Redknapp believes Tottenham Hotspur would have to capitulate in the final seven games of the season in order to miss out on Champions League qualification.
After Aston Villa were held to a draw against Brentford, Tottenham leapfrogged the Villans into fourth place following their 3-1 win over Nottingham Forest.
The Lilywhites are still tied on points with the Midlands club but they do have a game in hand. While a fifth-place finish might be enough to get into the Champions League, both sides would want to secure fourth to make sure of their entry into the competition.
However, Postecoglou is clearly fed up with questions about the race for fourth, stating in his post-match press conference on Sunday that he does not care about finishing in the top four, insisting that he is keener to see his side show signs of progress (Football.London).
Tottenham tipped for Champions League qualification
Reacting to the Tottenham boss’ comments, Roy Keane has told Sky Sports (as relayed by Birmingham Mail): “He (Postecoglou) seemed to be agitated in the last few weeks, obviously people asking him about the Champions League and he says ‘no, we just want to keep winning football matches and take it in our stride’.
“That’s fine, but you think where they were at the start of the season, the Kane scenario, he’s new to the club, but he’s done a brilliant job with the games they’ve won.
“They’ve got a great chance for the Champions League, their style of football, the freedom he’s given the players and how he’s come across in the media. I think he’s done a brilliant job.”
Redknapp was also quite complimentary of the work that Postecoglou has done at Tottenham, insisting that the Lilywhites will secure fourth place unless they have a poor finish to the campaign.
The former Spurs midfielder added: “They were unwatchable for years, Spurs, but he’s come in with signings, the belief in the way that they play. He talks a lot about next season and I think if they bring in some players they’re gonna be even better.
“They’ve got the nucleus of a young squad. Van De Ven is top quality, Maddison has been a good signing. I think they’re pretty much guaranteed to get into the top four, I can’t see Manchester United going on a run. It would be a capitulation from Tottenham if they didn’t get Champions League football right now.”
Spurs Web Opinion
If fifth place does prove enough to get into the Champions League, then Spurs do have qualification more or less sewn up.
However, if the extra spots go to Serie A and the Bundesliga (which is still very much possible), Tottenham still have a lot of work to do.
Given the difficult finish that Postecoglou’s men have to the season, Villa will still believe they have the race for fourth in their own hands.
