The fight over the price of the EpiPen, an emergency treatment device for severe allergic reactions, has officially reached Capitol Hill. CEO Heather Bresch of Mylan, the company that makes the EpiPen, defended the drug's drastic price increase during a congressional hearing Wednesday as a balance between "price and access," pointing out that Mylan only profits $50 for each two-pack sold and that it has in the past distributed EpiPens to schools for free.
Donald Trump has an arch-nemesis. It's not Jeb Bush or Ted Cruz or even Hillary Clinton, nor is it Megyn Kelly or the media or the Academy Awards — although Trump isn't particularly fond of any of them, either. But long before he ever stepped on a debate stage, Trump was locking horns with comedian and television host Rosie O'Donnell, and he has flung insults at her for nearly a decade now.
Openings for manufacturing jobs have averaged 353,000 a month this year, up from 311,000 a month last year, The Wall Street Journal reports. That's the highest level in 15 years.
Robert Caro, whose towering series of books The Years of Lyndon Johnson is a milestone in political journalism, will receive the National Book Award's lifetime achievement award for "Distinguished Contribution to American Letters," in November, The Associated Press reports. Caro has already won a competitive National Book Award and two Pulitzer Prizes for the series, which comprises four books, released in 1982, 1990, 2002, and 2012. His first book, a definitive biography of the controversial... Читать дальше...
In fact, mandatory paid sick leave appears to be faring well in New York City, by far the biggest of 26 U.S. cities to have passed such legislation. In a survey of New York businesses, 85 percent of employers said the 2013 law had had no effect on their business costs, 91 percent reported no reduction in hiring, and 94 percent said there had been no effect on business productivity. The study found most city businesses saw the policy passage as a "nonevent," Slate reports. Meanwhile... Читать дальше...
Tom Brady is currently serving a four-game suspension for his alleged participation in the 2015 Deflategate scandal, when the Patriots were accused of letting air out of game day footballs to give their quarterback an advantage over the Indianapolis Colts. But if you ask the right Patriots fans, you might hear a different story — one about gas laws and temperatures and rain and how rubbing a ball can make it lose pressure.
The growing threat of antibiotic-resistant superbugs prompted global leaders to meet Wednesday for only the fourth time ever about a health-related topic. In a meeting during this week's United Nations General Assembly, heads of state together with global health and agriculture groups acknowledged that antimicrobial resistance is a growing threat that requires prompt attention. "It's not that it may happen in the future, it's a very present reality," said U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon. The... Читать дальше...
The Federal Reserve held off on a rate hike Wednesday, falling in line with what had widely been predicted ahead of decision day. "A December rate hike is more likely," Jeremy Zirin, the chief equity strategist at UBS Wealth Management Americas, told USA Today. "The Fed doesn't want to be disruptive to the market, and it would clearly be a surprise to the market," had the hike come today.
Donald Trump is meeting with Fox News host Sean Hannity in Cleveland, Ohio, on Wednesday, to tape an hour-long town hall event in which Trump will explain his "efforts to win over African-Americans." Audience members will be invited to ask questions, with guest appearances from Trump campaign surrogate Ben Carson, campaign adviser and former Apprentice contestant Omarosa Manigault, and boxing promoter Don King.
The homemade bombs built by Ahmad Khan Rahami and placed in locations across New York and New Jersey over the weekend were constructed using materials he purchased on eBay, Vice reports. Rahami now faces charges for "bombing a place of public use" and "attempted murder," as well as a charge for the "use of weapons of mass destruction."
After months spent attempting to discredit Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton's campaign is reportedly now trying to re-establish its own candidate as the center of its message. As Election Day approaches, "voters aren't going to be able to rattle off her bullet points," Democratic strategist Anita Dunn told The Washington Post. "We're at a point in the campaign where voters want to hear what candidates are going to do — not just what's wrong with your opponent, but why you."
The death toll from Europe's migrant crisis rose once again Wednesday, when a boat crossing from Africa to Europe capsized off the Egyptian coast. The boat was carrying 600 people, which may have exceeded its carrying capacity and caused the boat to sink in the Mediterranean Sea, a senior security official in Egypt's Beheira province told Reuters. "The boat tilted and the migrants fell into the water," the official said.
Once every four years, we the people are graced with a self-righteous display unlike any other: the celebrities-nag-you-about-voting video. From the 1990s venture Rock the Vote to Sean "Diddy" Combs' Vote or Die movement, which originated in 2005, all the way down to the "oh, yes, they were famous once" cameos in this combative 2008 plea and 2012's bad-jokey pitch, the quadrennial lecture from famous people is a crucial part of election-year cheer.
Former New York congressman Anthony Weiner was reportedly in an online relationship with a 15-year-old girl last January, the Daily Mail reports. When reached for comment, Weiner did not deny the relationship but declined to address specifics, issuing a statement to the Daily Mail that said, in part: "I have repeatedly demonstrated terrible judgment about the people I have communicated with online and the things I have sent. I am filled with regret."
In a decision issued Tuesday, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled that in light of data evidencing disproportionate police profiling of black men, a black man's decision to flee police may be legitimate and should not automatically be treated as suspicious behavior or an implicit admission of guilt:
This past February, Donald Trump blasted 2012 Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney for not releasing his tax returns until late September — less than two months before election day — and for only doing so after being criticized by Sen. Harry Reid (D-Nev.):
Last September, police officers in Connecticut accidentally recorded themselves plotting to fake charges against a protester after they confiscated his cell phone and failed to realize it was still recording.
For this year's presidential debates, Facebook will be more than just a place to read your friends' sassy political status updates. ABC News has announced that it is teaming up with the social media site to stream the entirety of all three presidential face-offs (plus the single vice presidential showdown) via Facebook Live.
Being president isn't just fun stuff like swiveling around in the Oval Office chair — it's also meetings, phone calls, and (you guessed it!) more meetings.
A misconfiguration in one of North Korea's nameservers Monday night briefly gave the world a glimpse into what the internet looks like in the Hermit Kingdom. Turns out, there wasn't much to see: Across the entire country, there are apparently only 28 registered domain names. Unsurprisingly, Wired reported, that makes North Korea the "smallest top-level domain in the world."
With Election Day just around the corner, Hillary Clinton boasts a $90 million advantage across her campaign bank accounts over Donald Trump, The Wall Street Journal reports. While Trump has never exactly approached the election traditionally, the significant difference in funds does mean he likely has no chance on matching Clinton's TV spending or field staff between now and Nov. 8.
Voters with annual household incomes of $100,000 or more might be breaking from their typical voting habits in this presidential election. Though higher-income voters historically support Republican presidential candidates, a new Purple Slice online poll for Bloomberg Politics out Wednesday revealed Hillary Clinton is leading Donald Trump with that voting bloc. Clinton claimed 46 percent support among voters with annual household incomes of $100,000 or more, while Trump claimed 42 percent.
Corey Lewandowski apparently got paid by Donald Trump's campaign months after his tenure as campaign manager had ended. A report by ABC News out Wednesday highlighted campaign filings showing Lewandowski's company, Green Monster Consulting, LLC, received $20,000 for "strategy consulting" from Trump's presidential campaign in August. Lewandowski was fired as Trump's campaign manager in June.
Music plays an important role in politics, from book-ending rallies and speeches to the release of presidential playlists and the endorsements or disavowals of candidates by famous musicians. While President Barack Obama will undoubtedly have the best taste in music of any head of the White House for at least the next four years, Hillary Clinton is unpopular among many of her staffers and press pool for playing Rachel Platten's 2015 anthem "Fight Song" at seemingly every chance she gets.
Japan's central bank kept rates unchanged at negative 0.1 percent on Wednesday but surprised investors at the end of its two-day meeting by also setting a target rate of about zero percent for 10-year government bonds. The latter move was seen as an indication that the Bank of Japan was stepping up its fight against deflation after assessing the impact of past policies. World stocks gained after the announcement, and ahead of the Federal Reserve's scheduled announcement on its next move... Читать дальше...
