As Violence Flares in Ethiopia, Internet Goes Dark

Amid reports of violent clashes that have led to at least 15 deaths, the Ethiopian government has partially blocked internet access to its citizens, suppressing information about the exact scope of the violence and the response of the federal security forces.   Ethiopians have been unable to reliably reach Twitter and Facebook since Tuesday, and other services may also be affected. The loss of service was believed to be a response to ethnic clashes earlier this week in eastern Ethiopia, home to the Oromo and Somali ethnic groups. Читать дальше...

US Jets Intercepted Russian Warplanes in Syria, Pentagon Says

Two U.S. warplanes intercepted two Russian jets over a part of Syria they were not supposed to be operating in, the Pentagon said Thursday. At one point during Wednesday's incident, the American F-22 Raptor stealth fighters deployed radar and infrared countermeasures to try to persuade the Russian Su-25s to leave the area, and one U.S. pilot had to "aggressively maneuver" to avoid a midair collision, Pentagon spokesman Eric Pahon said.  The Russian fighters had flown into airspace controlled... Artificial Intelligence Finds Solar System With 8 Planets, Like Ours

A solar system with as many planets as our own has been discovered with the help of NASA's Kepler space telescope and artificial intelligence, the U.S. space agency said Thursday. "Our solar system now is tied for most number of planets around a single star," NASA said in a statement. However, none of the planets is expected to be hospitable to life. The eight-planet system, the largest known outside ours, orbits a star called Kepler 90, which is 2,545 light-years away. "The Kepler-90 star... Читать дальше...

Ukraine Leader Welcomes EU's Extension of Russia Sanctions

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko said on Thursday the EU's decision to extend economic sanctions on Russia was "an important political decision" on behalf of his country. Latest Round of Syrian Peace Talks Seen as ‘Missed Opportunity’

The eighth round of Syrian peace talks have ended on a sour note with the United Nations mediator describing them as a “missed opportunity.”  U.N. Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura did not hide his frustration and disappointment in the fact that real negotiations, as he called them, did not take place. He said great efforts were made to hear multiple voices and opinions — those of the government and the opposition and of Civil Society. Unfortunately, he said these many consultations did not end up in negotiations. Читать дальше...

UN Calls Syria Talks 'Big Missed Opportunity,' Seeks New Ideas

A round of Syria peace talks that ended on Thursday was a big missed opportunity, but there may be a new round next month if new ideas can be found to encourage President Bashar al-Assad's government to engage, U.N. mediator Staffan de Mistura said. The FCC voted 3-2 to adopt a plan advanced by chairman Ajit Pai, appointed to his position by President Donald Trump, for a "light touch" on regulating major telecommunication companies...
