Biden Signs Debt Ceiling Legislation

U.S. President Joe Biden signed into law on Saturday legislation that suspends the U.S. government’s debt limit through January 2025 and avoids a potentially disastrous default just days before the government runs out of cash to pay its bills.    His signature came with two days to spare: the Treasury Department had said the government wouldn’t have enough money to pay all of its bills by Monday.  The White House said the signing was done in private and announced it in an emailed statement. Gadhafi's Son on Hunger Strike in Lebanon, Protesting 'No Trial' Detention

A son of Libya’s late leader Moammar Gadhafi, who has been held in Lebanon for more than seven years, began a hunger strike Saturday to protest his detention without trial, his lawyer said.  Hannibal Gadhafi has been held in Lebanon since 2015 after he was kidnapped from neighboring Syria where he had been living as a political refugee. Three Europeans returned home Saturday a day after being released by Iran in a prisoner swap, and Tehran said there was no reason for Europeans to be arrested if they were not "exploited" by foreign security services. 3 Israeli Soldiers, Egyptian Officer Killed in Border Gunbattle

A gunbattle involving an Egyptian border guard in southern Israel along the border left three Israeli soldiers and the Egyptian officer dead Saturday, officials said. It was a rare instance of deadly violence along the frontier.  Lt. Col. Modi To Visit Site of Deadly Train Derailment in India

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi Is scheduled Saturday to visit the site of the massive train derailment that has claimed the lives of nearly 300 people and injured close to 900.  Modi is also expected to visit the hospital where the injured have been taken. A report in The Times of India said one of the trains involved in the accident entered the wrong track just moments before the derailment. Iran Plans Naval Alliance with Gulf States

Iran's navy commander said his country and Saudi Arabia, as well as three other Gulf states, plan to form a naval alliance that will also include India and Pakistan, Iranian media reported Saturday. WHO: Tanzania Declares End of Deadly Marburg Virus Outbreak

Tanzania on Friday declared the end of a deadly outbreak of the Marburg virus, more than two months after it was first confirmed, the World Health Organization said.  Nine cases - eight confirmed and one probable - and six deaths were recorded in the outbreak of the hemorrhagic fever in the northwestern region of Kagera, the WHO said in a statement.  The U.N. health agency said it was the first such outbreak in Tanzania, an East African country with a population of almost 62 million.  The last confirmed case tested negative on April 19... A teenager reported to British anti-terror authorities by his mother was jailed for life Friday. Matthew King, 19, will serve a minimum term of six years for plotting a terror attack on police officers or soldiers.
