Flights resumed at Munich airport on Sunday, a day after they were suspended due to snowfall, but disruption to rail traffic in parts of southern Germany was set to continue. Germany's second largest airport said on its website that flights resumed at 6:00 am (0500 GMT) but added that some "disruption to air traffic" would continue and advised passengers to check with their carriers well in advance before traveling to the airport. In total, 760 flights were affected, an airport spokesperson told AFP on Saturday. Читать дальше...

In a report released Saturday, Hengaw disclosed a notable surge of 56.5% in the number of executions during November, recording 122 compared to the 78 reported in October. Читать дальше...

Houthi Insurgents Attack US Warship, Commercial Vessels in Red Sea

Iranian-backed Houthi insurgents in Yemen launched armed drones and missiles in a five-hour-long attack targeting a U.S. warship and several commercial ships in the Red Sea, the Pentagon said Sunday, with at least one of the missiles hitting a Bahamas-flagged cargo vessel.  “Houthi forces attacked multiple commercial vessels in the Red Sea early this morning,” the Defense Department said. “The USS Carney lended aid in some circumstances and shot down Houthi drones that were headed in its general direction.”  It said the Carney... In Some Neighborhoods in Drought-Prone Kenya, Clean Water Is Scarce

As the sun rises in the Bondeni-Jua Kali neighborhood on the outskirts of Kenya’s capital Nairobi, dozens of women and men step out of their corrugated iron homes with yellow jerricans, skip over pools of sewage and make their way to a nearby water vending station. There is no piped water or sewage system in the area and drought has made clean water supplies scarcer and expensive for locals. Twice a week, trucks with 5,000 to 10,000 liters (1,300 to 2,600 gallons) of water will fill up vending... Читать дальше...

1 Dead, 11 Missing after Landslide, Flash Floods Hit Indonesia's Sumatra Island

Rescuers recovered the body of a man buried under tons of mud and rocks from flash floods and a landslide that crashed onto a hilly village on Indonesia’s Sumatra island. Officials said Sunday that 11 people are still missing. Tons of mud, rocks and trees rolled down from a mountain late Friday triggered by torrential rain, reaching a river that burst its banks and tore through mountainside villages near the popular Lake Toba in North Sumatra province. Rescuers used excavators, dogs and sometimes... Читать дальше...

Southern Gaza Town Under Intense Attack

The southern Gaza town of Khan Younis has come under an unrelenting attack from the Israeli military and there does not appear to be any letup in sight for the hundreds of thousands of Palestinians who were told to go south to avoid Israel’s deadly assault following the Hamas terror attack on October 7. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Saturday that the campaign would last until all the hostages are returned and Hamas is eliminated. “A tough war is ahead of us,” he said. The attack on Khan Younis... Читать дальше...

In Boost for Modi, India's BJP Set to Win 3 of 4 Key State Polls

India's ruling nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday appeared set to win three of four states in key regional polls, in a big boost for Prime Minister Narendra Modi ahead of general elections in six months. The heartland states of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, and the southern state of Telangana, voted last month in the last set of provincial elections before the national vote due by May, when Modi seeks a third term. BJP had established clear leads in all three heartland states and appeared set to win them... Читать дальше...

Philippine President Blames Foreign Militants for Bombing That Killed 4

The Philippine president blamed "foreign terrorists" for a bomb blast that killed four people Sunday, wounded dozens of other Catholic worshippers in the south and sparked a security alarm, including in the capital, Manila, where state forces were put on alert. The suspected bomb, which the police said was made from a mortar round, went off and hit students and teachers who attended a Mass in a gymnasium at Mindanao State University in southern Marawi city, Taha Mandangan, the security chief of the state-run campus... UN Climate Talks Focus on Ailing Earth’s Effect on Human Health

With Planet Earth running a fever, U.N. climate talks focused Sunday on the contagious effects on human health. Under a brown haze over Dubai, the COP28 summit moved past two days of lofty rhetoric and calls for unity from top leaders to concerns on health issues like the deaths of at least 7 million people globally from air pollution each year and the spread of diseases like cholera and malaria as global warming upends weather systems. World Health Organization Director-General Tedros Adhanom... Читать дальше...

French Yoga Leader Promised Enlightenment, Now Accused Of Sex Abuse

To his followers, he was "Grieg," their guide through tantra yoga toward enlightenment and a higher state of consciousness. For European police, Gregorian Bivolaru represents a far more sinister figure: a master manipulator accused of sexual abuse and exploitation.  The arrest this week in the Paris region of the 71-year-old Romanian yoga guru and 40 others marked the culmination of a six-year manhunt involving Interpol. The raid, led by 175 officers of a French police unit that combats sect-related crime... Читать дальше...

Climate Change Shuts Decades-Old New England Shrimp Fishery

New England's long-shuttered shrimp business, which fell victim to warming waters, will remain in a fishing moratorium indefinitely, fishery regulators ruled Friday.  The shrimping business was based mostly in Maine and produced small, pink shrimp that were a winter delicacy in New England and across the country. The industry has been in a moratorium since 2013 in large part because environmental conditions off New England are unfavorable for the cold water-loving shrimp.  That moratorium will remain in effect with no firm end date... Egg Producers Ordered to Pay $17.7M for Conspiring to Limit Supplies

A federal jury in Illinois ordered $17.7 million in damages — an amount tripled to more than $53 million under federal law — to be paid to several food manufacturing companies who had sued major egg producers over a conspiracy to limit the egg supply in the U.S.  The jury ruled last week that the egg producers used various means to limit the domestic supply of eggs to increase the price of products during the 2000s. The time frame of the conspiracy was an issue throughout the case; jurors ultimately... Читать дальше...

Some Worry Philadelphia Ski Mask Ban Will Unfairly Target Some

Philadelphia City Council passed legislation to ban ski masks in some public spaces, a measure supporters say will increase public safety amid high violent crime, but opponents argue it will unfairly target people without proof of any wrongdoing. The legislation passed on Thursday with a 13-2 vote, and now goes to Democratic Mayor Jim Kenney. A spokesperson said he would review the legislation and "looks forward to our ongoing work with City Council on the urgent matter of ensuring public safety." The measure would ban ski masks... Too young to get Social Security, Genaldi now lives temporarily in a shelter for people 55 and older in Phoenix while he navigates the process of qualifying for disability payments. Читать дальше...

What to Know About Sikh Independence Movement

The U.S. has charged an Indian national in what prosecutors allege was a failed plot to assassinate a Sikh separatist at the behest of an unnamed Indian government official. The charges announced Wednesday against an Indian national arrested in June in Europe come two months after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said there were credible accusations that India may have been linked to the killing of a Sikh activist near Vancouver, straining relations between the two countries. Venezuelans to Vote in Referendum on Guyana Land Dispute

Venezuelans will vote Sunday in a referendum to supposedly decide the future of a large swath of neighboring Guyana their government claims ownership of, arguing the territory was stolen when a north-south border was drawn more than a century ago. Burkina Faso, Niger Join Mali in Leaving G5 Anti-Jihadi Force

The military leaders of Burkina Faso and Niger said Saturday they would quit the G5 anti-jihadi force in Africa's Sahel region, the latest blow to the fight against insurgents in one of the world's most troubled zones. The G5, created in 2014, has secured meager results, with Mali also quitting the original five-nation force last year in the wake of a military coup. Leaders of the five countries agreed to deploy a joint anti-terror task force backed by France in 2017, but the military rulers of Burkina Faso... Читать дальше...
