The Fiat G-91 and the Portuguese Air Force.
In 1966, Portugal was facing three wars in Africa. With embargos from the major weapons producers, Portugal decided to buy and upgrade the italian Fiat G-91.
The Fiat G-91 is a multi-role fighter-bomber. Nimble and with a low maitenance, it was perfectly suited for a war in Africa. Since 1966 until 1974, the Fiat was used in combat every single day and only one pilot lost his life in combat during that time, as he was shot down by a Strela missile in Guinea.
New tactics and a new paint coat that difused the plane's signal to the missile rendered the Strella ineffective, as it never shot down another portuguese plane.
Some great historical footage from the Fiat G-91, our 60's and 70's Air Force and of our war in Africa.
