Robbie Amell & Andy Allo Interview: Upload Season 2 | Screen Rant
Screen Rant interviews Upload stars Robbie Amell and Andy Allo about what to expect from season 2 and how they rebuilt their on-set chemistry.
Upload season 2 follows Nathan Brown (Robbie Amell) as he continues to discover the truth of his untimely death, which has brought him to the digital afterlife known as Lakeview, and as he reels from his missed opportunity to declare his love for his customer service "angel" Nora (Andy Allo). At the end of season 1, an attack while investigating the circumstances of Nathan's demise compelled Nora to leave her home and her job at Horizon. The Prime Video sci-fi comedy created by Greg Daniels enters its second installment as Nora joins a group called "The Ludds," who rebel against technology and virtual afterlives. Meanwhile, Nathan faces a troubling ordeal when his ex-girlfriend Ingrid (Allegra Edwards) unexpectedly has "uploaded" herself to Lakeview to be with him forever.
Screen Rant interviewed Robbie Amell and Andy Allo about what's in store for Nathan and Nora in Upload season 2, as well as how the actors maintained their chemistry from season 1.
Screen Rant: Andy, I want to start with you. At the end of season 1, Nora was on her way out of the city. Can you share a little about her journey in season 2 and the new people she meets?
Andy Allo: Season 2 picks up right where season 1 left off, so Nora enters the Ludd camp. Season 2 really explores what life is like without technology. There's a lot of interesting characters and we get to ser her navigating the different personalities, and even within the Ludd camp, all the different levels of activism and how that influences her and how she starts to find her way. She meets someone that she starts having feelings for, so she moves on a little bit from Nathan as she's nursing her broken heart. All of that experience in those first few episodes of the season really shape how she shows up as a leader and her coming into her own on the rest of the season, which is really cool.
Ingrid's unexpected upload to Lakeview certainly gets a reaction out of Nathan at the end of season 1. So, Robbie, what does her now-permanent presence mean for him given their complicated relationship and Nathan's feelings for Nora?
Robbie Amell: At the end of season, it really looked like he had made his way away from Ingrid and things might work out with Nora, and then the world said no. It's sad, he wanted to say, "I love you, too." Nora said it and he ran out of data, and then in pops Ingrid. She has uploaded for him, she's made a huge sacrifice, and that would weigh on somebody. So, he misses Nora and he's gonna try and get her back, but at the end of the day, life continues to move forward and it doesn't look like Nora is going to be in his life anymore. He has to try and figure out what that means for him and Ingrid and whether uploading is going to do for Ingrid what it did for Nathan, helping him figure out who he is and grow up, and learn to be a better person, or if she's going to be the same materialistic Ingrid. So, it was really fun to play those scenes with Allegra and Kevin [Bigley] and the scenes with Nora when she pops in. But I don't know, maybe they get back together.
Since Nathan and Nora spend so much of their time apart in season 2, how easy or challenging for you both to reestablish that chemistry that you built in season 1?
Andy Allo: It really helps that Robbie is so nice [laughs]. What was great is, even throughout the pandemic, we have a group chat together, the cast. So, we were keeping in touch. We kept up that friendship, we kept up those relationships, so coming back into it, it really was just getting back into this comfortable, home-like family. We all were so excited to get back to work, so it was like no time had passed, yet here we were a couple years later just playing, and that's what it felt like.
Robbie Amell: I thought what was really nice, too, was because we were shooting during COVID, and the first couple episodes, Nathan and Nora aren't really seeing each other, Andy and I didn't really see each other. So, we're back on these sets, we're back playing these characters, and all of season 1 was Andy and I, multiple scenes a day hanging out. And I missed her, like this is so weird, I'm with different people on the same sets. So when Andy and I were on set together, it felt a little special and I think that gave that little extra bit of, "Oh my God, there she is." You could put that into the Nathan and Nora thing really easily and it helps that our cast, we're all good friends, we all love the show, we're all fans of the show, we're all fans of Greg. It makes our job a lot easier.
Upload season 2 premieres March 11 on Prime Video.
