Mets Expected to Give Elian Peña Around $5 Million Bonus
Elian Peña, a highly touted infielder from the Dominican Republic, is expected to sign with the Mets to the largest bonus among his peers when the next international signing period opens on Jan. 15, 2025, according to a Baseball America report on Wednesday.
Peña’s bonus will likely be around $5 million, according to the report, which highlighted a dozen international players expected to sign at the same time. That will make up most of the $6.2 million the Mets have in their bonus pool.
Peña, Ben Badler of Baseball America wrote, “is a polished lefthanded hitter and one of the most dangerous offensive threats in the class. It’s a sweet lefty swing that’s compact and stays through the hitting zone a long time, with Peña showing the ability to manipulate the barrel to consistently square up pitches for hard contact throughout the strike zone.”
Some scouts thought Peña could play third, while others thought he might be able to handle shortstop, according to Badler, who also posted a video of Peña hitting on X.
