Megill Will Pitch Sunday or Monday; Smith, Raley to Miss More Time
The New York Mets yet again are making some roster moves. Tylor Megill has rejoined the team in Philadelphia, and though he hasn’t been activated yet, Mike Puma of the New York Post reported that “[Carlos] Mendoza’s plan is to start Megill on Sunday or Monday.”
Megill was initially put on the 15-day injured reserve due to a strain in his right shoulder back on March 31 against the Brewers. He then started his rehab assignment with the Brooklyn Cyclones on April 27 and finished his last rehab start with the Syracuse Mets. Over the four starts, Megill posted an ERA of 0.64 with 23 strikeouts over 14 innings pitched.
In regards to the bullpen, Mendoza gave some more updates on Drew Smith and Brooks Raley in what their return to the team will look like.
Mendoza had this to say about Smith: “Drew had a little bit of a setback. Yesterday after he played catch right before the game he came in and said something to the trainers… Complained about a pinch on the back of his shoulder. Before it was more on the front part of the shoulder, but now it is more on the back. We do not think it is anything serious… The plan is for him to continue to throw.” Before the Fort Worth native was placed on the 15-day injured reserve list, he appeared 10 times and struck out 11 with an ERA of 2.70.
For Brooks Raley, he officially has a UCL strain and will be shut down for two weeks. According to MLB.com reporter Anthony DiComo, the hope is that he will be able to avoid surgery by shutting down from baseball activity.
Mendoza said of Raley: “He’s got a UCL strain, but it is healing. They got an MRI yesterday and showed signs of healing. He is going to be shut down the next two weeks and treat it, and we will see where he is at after two weeks whether he is going to take the next step throwing wise or see what we are dealing with.” Before Raley was shut down, over his eight appearances on the season he struck out nine and gave up no runs with a WHIP of 0.71.
