Stop discussing Armenian Genocide - Edmon Marukyan
ArmInfo. On his Facebook account, former Ambassador-at-Large Edmon Marukyan made a call to
abandon discussions on the topic of the Armenian Genocide.
The day before, at a briefing, the head of the RA National Assembly
Commission on Defense and Security Issues, Andranik Kocharyan, said
that it is necessary to clarify and record the names of all victims
of the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire. According to him, you
need to have a list of everyone, "in case there are more or less than
1.5 million, as is commonly believed." Kocharyan noted that the Jews
succeeded in this, and Armenia can do the same. This initiative is
also important for building relations with Turkey, and there is no
need to be embarrassed about this. Before the declaration of
independence, this should have been done by the Church, Armenian
political parties, and diaspora structures. The names of all victims
must be at the disposal of the Yerevan Genocide Museum-Institute.
According to the deputy, if this has not been done yet, then the gap
needs to be filled, otherwise the opposite side, that is, Turkey,
will continue to say that there was no Genocide.
In this regard, Edmon Marukyan noted that this kind of discussion
plays into the hands of official Ankara. The Armenian genocide is a
fact recognized by the academic, scientific and political community.
"Over 30 countries and a number of international organizations have
recognized the fact of the Armenian Genocide. This is a taboo and
cannot be discussed. Close discussions on this topic, this is a
recognized fact," the politician said.
Regarding that part of Kocharyan's statements, according to which it
is necessary to identify the names of all those killed, then, as
Marukyan emphasized, Turkey is only waiting for this moment to put
the issue on the agenda for discussion, and not to condemn the fact
of the Armenian Genocide.
