88-year-old heat record broken in Concordia, NWS says
A new record heat is being established in a Kansas town.
CONCORDIA (KSNT) - Unseasonably high temperatures in north central Kansas have led to the establishment of a new heat record this month.
The National Weather Service (NWS) station in Topeka announced on social media on April 14 that a heat record set in 1936 was broken in Concordia. The previous record high was recorded on April 13, 1936, at 89 degrees with the new record set at 91 degrees.
In the list of Kansas all-time records kept by the NWS, the highest daily max temperature goes to the town of Fredonia in Wilson County. This record was set on July 24, 1936 for 121 degrees.
Temperatures are expected to dip back down by next weekend in northeast Kansas with chances for hail, gusty winds and tornadoes on the way in an oncoming storm system. Learn more about what's ahead from KSNT Stormtrack Meteorologist Becky Taylor by clicking here.
