Chile's State-owned Codelco, the world's largest copper producer, said Thursday a worker had died in an accident at its Radomiro Tomic mine in northern Chile while performing maintenance work. The incident occurred late Wednesday as the 33-year-old operator worked in an extraction truck. "Work in the accident sector was immediately suspended, and we informed the authorities of the situation," the firm said in a statement.

The Voisey’s Bay mine, in Labrador, Canada, is gearing up to resume operations, following a three-month shutdown associated with the Covid-19 outbreak. Brazil’s Vale announced on Thursday that it had moved from care and maintenance into a planned maintenance period at Voisey’s Bay as a first step to resuming operations in early July. This includes restarting critical path activities related to the Voisey’s Bay mine expansion project. Full capacity should be reached by early August, the major added.

Canada’s Natural Resources Minister Seamus O’Regan has reaffirmed the country’s commitment to develop an integrated North American supply chain for critical minerals. A year ago, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and President Donald Trump committed to such a supply chain and in January, the two neighbouring nations finalised an action plan to guide cooperation.

Poland's JSW, the European Union's biggest coking coal producer, has launched a campaign to defend miners who it says have faced public abuse and unfair blame on social media over a rise in coronavirus infections. Infections among miners have been disproportionately high, according to Health Ministry figures, accounting for about half of the daily rise in cases in past weeks, while miners account for almost 20% of Poland's total reported coronavirus cases.

India officially started opening its coal sector to non-State firms, seeking to end a decades-long government monopoly on mining and selling the fuel. The country on Thursday launched its first auction process, which will cover 41 mines, the Ministry of Coal said in a statement. Dual-listed Jubilee Metals Group has secured the rights to about 150-million tonnes of copper-containing surface tailings targeted to be upgraded at site and refined at its Sable Refinery in Zambia. Jubilee has secured the rights to the material through its subsidiary Braemore Holdings, by entering into a joint venture agreement with the mining rights holder Star Tanganika to process the about 150-million tonnes of copper-containing tailings.

TSX-V-listed Precipitate Gold has announced the start of exploration and field work by gold major Barrick Gold at the Pueblo Grande project, in the Dominican Republic. Precipitate’s Pueblo Grande is adjacent to Barrick’s Pueblo Viejo gold and silver mine and the major has an option to earn 70% into the project by spending $10-million.

ASX-listed American Pacific Borates has accelerated construction activities at its Fort Cady borate mine, in the US. This follows the June 1 announcement of A$77-million raised to fully finance Phase 1A of the mine.

Australia called for submissions on Thursday to an inquiry into how mining giant Rio Tinto legally blew up two sacred Aboriginal caves that showed human history stretching back at least 46,000 years. Rio in late May destroyed the sacred caves in the Juukan Gorge in the Pilbara region of Western Australia, having been granted state government approval in 2013. Brazilian iron-ore miner Vale has received permission to reopen mines in the Itabira complex shuttered due to coronavirus concerns, the company said in a Wednesday filing, adding there was no change to its production guidance. Vale said it had received permission to reopen the mines from Minas Gerais state labor inspectors. They concluded that the measures Vale had taken to mitigate the threat from the virus and protect its workforce were sufficient to restart works, the company said. Nonetheless, Vale said work would kick off gradually.
