Taking the current ongoing disruption, as a result of Covid-19, into account, private investment company Long State Investment associate Jessie Chen expects a bright future and positive outlook for junior mining companies over the next 12 to 18 months. In a Mines and Money-hosted webinar and panel discussion on September 3, she elaborated that, the next year was likely to be a very busy one for junior miners, especially as global junior mining activity had been temporarily suspended owing to the pandemic and related restrictions.

Aim-listed Caledonia Mining Corporation has raised $13-million for the construction of a solar power plant to supply electricity to the Blanket gold mine, in Zimbabwe, through the sale and issue of about 600 000 shares in the company, pursuant to an “at the market” (ATM) sales agreement with Cantor Fitzgerald. Following the issue of the ATM shares, the company has 12.1-million shares in issue.

NYSE- and TSX-listed Barrick Gold has appointed Nguvu Moja Security Services (NMSS) to assist in ensuring the safety of employees at its gold mines in Tanzania. The Tanzanian-owned and managed firm is replacing an international security firm on site. Barrick says the firm is already active at the North Mara operations, but will also be fully deployed at the Bulyanhulu and Buzwagi mines by mid-September. The total number of Tanzanian security personnel now working at Barrick’s mines and administration office in the country is 462.

PT Freeport Indonesia expects its annual copper and gold sales to jump next year as it transitions to operating in its underground mine, CEO Tony Wenas told a virtual conference on Friday. Freeport Indonesia expects this year's copper and gold sales to be lower than usual at 0.77-billion pounds and 0.82-million ounces respectively. Coal miner MC Mining has concluded a subscription agreement with Columbia Skies Holdings (CSH), which is owned by black industrialist Pitso Madibo, for 7.8-million ordinary MC Mining shares, or a 4.8% stake. The CSH shares will be allotted in terms of the company’s ASX-approved capacity and will raise about R10-million, or $600 000, for MC Mining.

The World Gold Council (WGC) has appointed streaming company Wheaton Precious Metals president and CEO Randy Smallwood as its new chairperson. Smallwood is replacing former AngloGold Ashanti CEO Kelvin Dushnisky, who was appointed WGC chairperson in March. He recently stepped down as CEO of AngloGold. Commenting on his appointment, Smallwood said that he was looking forward to work with WGC CEO David Tait and the team to advance the work of the council and to deliver industry-leading standards that help set the bar.

Brazilian iron-ore major Vale has made its first sale using blockchain technology, a move which the company said was an important step towards the digitalisation of the sales and trade process. The sale with Nanjing Iron & Steel Group International Trade, a subsidiary of Nanjing Iron and Steel, was for a cargo of 176 000 tons of Brazilian blend fines (BRBF) from Teluk Rubiah Maritime Terminal, in Malaysia, to China.

Nickel miner SLN has asked a commercial court in New Caledonia to appoint an expert to help with discussions over a rescue plan, its parent company Eramet said on Thursday. SLN submitted on Wednesday a request to the court to name an expert under a temporary procedure, an Eramet spokeswoman said. She declined to give further details, citing the confidentiality of the court procedure.
