Multi-asset, Africa-focused energy company Kibo Energy has proceeded with several steps to progress ongoing negotiations regarding a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Baobab Resources to supply about 200 MW of energy to Baobab’s Tete steel and vanadium project, in Mozambique. The Baobab power project, together with Kibo Energy’s Benga power plant project (BPPP), is being developed to produce about 350 MW to 400 MW of baseload electricity.

Aim-listed Katoro Gold says pre-drill rig and technical team mobilisation is now under way at its Haneti exploration project, in Tanzania. This will prepare the site for a maiden drilling programme targeting nickel sulphide and platinum group metal mineralisation.

Underground development at TSX-listed Ivanhoe Mines’ Kamoa-Kakula copper project, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), totalled 2 069 m in September, setting a new monthly record for the project by bringing the total underground development to more than 22.6 km – 7 km, or 44%, ahead of schedule. The underground development comprises 1 694 m at the Kakula mine and 373 m at the Kansoko mine.

Dual-listed gold miner Caledonia Mining has declared an increased quarterly dividend of $0.10 on each of the company’s common shares. This marks an 18% increase from the previous quarterly dividend of $0.085 paid in July and is a 45% cumulative increase from $0.069 since October 2019.

Mining companies are increasingly considering hydropower as a power source for their mines in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Hydropower, whether pumped storage or run-of-river, is a low-cost, clean form of energy in areas with rivers or dams.

RWE has received 45 bids for one of its giant bucket-wheel excavators used in mining that it put up for sale in an online auction earlier this year, Germany's largest power producer has said. The 3 500-tonne "Bagger 275" is the smallest of RWE's 22-strong excavator fleet and has a capacity of 60 000 cubic metres per day - enough to fill 24 Olympic-size swimming pools. Brazilian miner Vale said on Thursday that 71 out of 104 structures across Brazil have received positive stability assessments from the company's dam monitoring system. Of the 33 that have not received positive stability assessments, 32 are in the firm's ferrous metals operations, it said in a securities filing.

Aim-listed Anglesey Mining has started a preliminary economic assessment (PEA) for its Parys Mountain base and precious metals project, in north Wales, targeting a longer mine life beyond those indicated previously. The PEA follows from the optimisation studies recently completed by QME Mining Technical Services (QME), which highlighted up to ten-million tonnes of potentially mineable material available at Parys Mountain, which is significantly larger than the 2.1-million tonnes of indicated resource that was used in the 20117 scoping study.

While it awaits a court ruling to declare the validity of its mining licence for the Sandpiper marine phosphate project off the Namibian coast, Namibian Marine Phosphate (NMP) has decided to embark on a job registration drive. Once the project gets the final go-ahead for development, with the ruling expected at the latest in March next year, NMP expects to employ more than 600 Namibians directly and indirectly for construction and operations in Walvis Bay, as well as create opportunities for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

Lockdowns, a consequence of the Covid-19 pandemic, across Chile, Peru and Mexico, including the closure of some of the world’s largest copper mines, were a key factor behind a 3.7% year-on-year decline in copper output from the world’s top ten producers in the second quarter this year, reports data and analytics company GlobalData. The prefeasibility study (PFS) for the Alpala project, in the Cascabel concession in northern Ecuador, has been delayed, LSE- and TSX-listed SolGold reported on Wednesday. The company planned to deliver the PFS at the end of the third quarter, but Covid-19-related restrictions have limited physical access to the site, which resulted in geotechnical data not being available to meet the study schedule originally contemplated.

Uranium developer Boss Resources will raise A$15-million in a share placement to fund ongoing technical process optimisation studies and exploration at the Honeymoon project, in South Australia. The single tranche share placement will consist of some 225-million shares, priced at 6.7c a share, with Boss having received form commitments from institutional and sophisticated investors.

Mining major BHP has committed to training and funding for 3,500 new Australian apprenticeship and training positions, and driving up to $450 million into supporting business opportunities in Australia’s mining, equipment, technology and services (METS) sector. CEO Mike Henry on Thursday said that the nearly A$800-million funding package would comprise three key elements, which would be deployed over the next five years.

Canada's Lundin Mining, owner of the Candelaria mine in Chile, has requested government mediation in a last-ditch effort to stave off a strike by one of its unions after failing to reach a contract deal, the company said on Wednesday. The mine's union of 350 members rejected the company's latest most recent offer on September 28, leaving negotiations at a stand-still. Mexican precious metals mining company Fresnillo said on Wednesday it had taken up $481.721-million of a tender offer to buy back some $800-million of its notes maturing in 2023. The company, a unit of miner Industrias Peñoles, last week launched the offer on the notes, which pay a coupon of 5.500%.

Chile expects $74-billion in mining investment in the next decade, driven mainly by the copper industry, the country's top exporter, State copper agency Cochilco, said on Wednesday. The roster of investments includes sprawling projects from such top global miners as Antofagasta, Lundin Mining, Teck Resources and Kinross Gold. But the agency noted that 23 projects valued at $44-billion have been delayed because of coronavirus.
