Mining production decreased by 8.4% year-on-year in July, which financial services provider Nedbank says marked a sixth consecutive month of contraction in mining production. The major negative contributors were gold with a decline of 19.7% and contribution of -3.1 percentage points; platinum group metals (PGMs) with 12.2% lower production and a contribution of -2.8 percentage points; and iron-ore, which recorded a 20.4% output slump and contributed -2.7 percentage points.

LSE-listed potash developer Kore Potash posted an interim loss of $903 210 for the six months ended June 30, an improvement on the loss of $1.29-million for the six months ended June 30, 2021. This represents a loss of $0.03 a share for the interim period.

Diamond producer Petra Diamonds has reported record results in terms of three metrics for the financial year ended June 30, which CEO Richard Duffy said would allow the company to maximise the benefit gained from a higher diamond price environment. More than half the tropical deforestation caused by industrial mining in the last two decades took place in Indonesia, according to a new study. The researchers, whose paper was published September 12 in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), overlapped the geographic coordinates of industrial mines with forest loss data from 2000 to 2019, focusing on 26 countries.

Canada-based Aya Gold & Silver on Monday announced a transaction with the government of Morocco, which not only increased its ownership of the Zgounder silver mine to 100%, but also the review and evaluation of additional exploration ground in the country. The TSX- and OTCQX-listed company reached an agreement with the National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines (ONHYM) to acquire its 15% interest in the Zgounder project and five adjacent permits for 67-million dirhams (about $6.5-million).

Precious metals miner Equinox Gold has resumed operations at the Los Filos mine, in Mexico, after a meeting with community leaders ended a blockade at the mine. The company reports that it will continue to with the Mezcala community and other community leaders to strengthen relationships and foster long-term, stable operations at the Los Filos mine.

Scientists have discovered a tougher form of diamonds preserved in meteorites from an ancient dwarf planet, which could revolutionalise industrial diamond manufacturing. A research team with scientists from Monash University, RMIT University, the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) and the Australian Synchrotron and Plymouth University, has confirmed the existence of lonsdaleite, a nano-sized diamond, that could be useful for cutting through ultra-solid materials on mining sites.

Fortescue Future Industries (FFI) founder and executive chairperson Dr Andrew Forrest has met with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi this week, Forrest to discuss the development of green energy projects in the region. FFI has already signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to conduct studies with a view to developing green hydrogen production in the Arab Republic of Egypt. The meeting discussed the potential development of a green hydrogen production project with a 9.2GW installed capacity.

Diversified miner Rio Tinto has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with automotive major Volvo Group to partner on low carbon materials and to pilot autonomous hauling solutions. Under the MoU, Rio will supply responsibly sourced low-carbon products and solutions to Volvo and the companies will work towards decarbonising Rio’s operations through piloting Volvo’s sustainable autonomous hauling solutions.

Construction has started at the Kipushi zinc mine, in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), paving the way for the historic mine to return to production by late 2024 – a century since the mine was first opened and 30 years since it was placed on care and maintenance. Canadian company Ivanhoe Mines and its joint venture partner, State-owned Gecamines, recently hosted a breaking-ground ceremony to commemorate the start of construction of the processing plant at the mine, which will produce zinc, copper, germanium and silver.

South African authorities shut down the Jagersfontein diamond tailings dam in 2020 due to high water levels before allowing it to reopen last year, a company official said on Monday, a day after the dam burst, killing at least one person and injuring 40. Sludge flooded out of the tailings dam on Sunday morning, sweeping away houses and cars in Jagersfontein in the Free State province, 514 km southwest of Johannesburg.

A United States aviation fuel developer has placed an order for a containerised platinum-using proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyser. Nel Hydrogen received the $3-million contract for the containerised PEM electrolyser to be installed at the world’s first commercial ‘alcohol-to-jet’ production plant for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), built by LanzaJet.

Canadian mining company Sierra Metals has reported the death of three contractor employees at its Yauricocha mine, in Peru, citing a mudslide incident at the underground mine. One person was also injured in the incident, which occurred on Sunday afternoon.

One dead, four still missing, more than 50 homes destroyed, scores left displaced, cars overturned on their roofs, and hundreds of animals left for dead.  This is the bleak image of Jagersfontein in the Free State, after a mining dam wall collapsed and left a trail of destruction.

The sulphate of potash (SOP) purification plant at the Beyondie mine, in Western Australia, has been restarted. ASX-listed Kalium Lakes in August performed a planned shut-down at the plant for further optimisation and rectification works, which included a focus on the flotation circuit where opportunities had been identified to further improve the recovery of schoenite.
