Another midfielder injured, Ten Hag could turn to youngsters for FA Cup tie
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has revealed that Scott McTominay could miss Red Devils’ FA Cup quarter-final clash with Fulham through injury.
McTominay was part of the 21-man squad which faced Real Betis this past Thursday but he did not get off the bench.
Ten Hag has now revealed that the midfielder wasn’t brought on due to an injury concern.
He told ManUtd.com, “About the last game, that is why I didn’t bring him in, Scott McTominay, [as] he had some complaints.
“We have to see how that will progress in the coming hours and days.”
If McTominay fails to recover his fitness, Ten Hag will be short of options in the midfield.
Christian Eriksen is out nursing his injury and Casemiro will serve the first of his four-game suspension tomorrow.
This would have been a perfect opportunity for McTominay to show the manager what he brings to the team. His role in the team has been reduced since Casemiro started his first United game.
Currently, Fred, Marcel Sabitzer and Bruno Fernandes are the only three senior midfielders available.
It is a comeback game for Sabitzer as he missed the last couple of games due to an injury.
The Austrian might be deployed in the number six role. He did a fine job when he filled in during Casemiro’s first suspension.
Kobbie Mainoo and Zidane Iqbal might get a few minutes under their belt as well. The two starlets have been a part of Ten Hag’s squad this season.
The former is rated highly by the Dutchman, making an appearance each in Carabao Cup, FA Cup and Premier League. On the other hand, Iqbal is yet to feature for United’s first team even after impressing everyone in pre-season games.
