More Hawai‘i residents are paying monthly membership fees for direct primary care because they cannot get timely appointments through insurance. Honolulu Civil Beat reports that Kiah Bland is among them. She decided to pay about $200 a month to join a practice that skips insurance billing. Doctors say the steady income lets them offer longer visits and even phone or text care. A national study says most of these clinics offer same-day appointments. Supporters say the model cuts burnout and keeps doctors working. Читать дальше...
Nevada has launched a new statewide policy that puts clear labels on how sensitive state data is and how agencies protect it. On Wednesday, the Governor’s Technology Office says the policy creates a shared system, so agencies can exchange data with less confusion. State officials say they started the work before a cyberattack shut down systems in late August. The policy adds four categories: public, sensitive, confidential, and restricted. Agencies choose the label and default to stricter protection when unsure. Читать дальше...

Trump says he told Benjamin Netanyahu he prefers a deal if Iran agrees. Trump says the deal needs bans on nuclear weapons and missiles. Netanyahu’s office says he wants tougher limits, including on missiles and Iran’s support for Hamas and Hezbollah. The two sides held indirect talks in Oman on Friday. The article says tensions stay high after the June war and... Читать дальше...
Nigerian authorities say the United States is sending troops to Nigeria to train the West African country's military in combating extremism as a multifaceted security crisis spreads in the north. A U.S. official said Wednesday that around 200 American troops are expected to arrive in Nigeria. The country has been a focus of Washington after U.S. President Donald Trump accused Nigeria protecting Christians from an alleged genocide. U.S. forces launched airstrikes on Islamic State group-affiliated militants in northwestern Nigeria in December. Читать дальше...
The Federal Aviation Administration has reopened the airspace around El Paso International Airport in Texas, just hours after it announced a 10-day closure that would have grounded all flights to and from the airport. The FAA announced in a social media post on Wednesday that it had lifted the temporary closure of the airspace, saying that there was no threat to commercial aviation and all flights would resume. The shutdown was expected to create significant disruptions given the duration and the size of the metropolitan area. Читать дальше...
Scientists are testing an entirely new way to fight heart disease: whether gene editing might offer a one-time fix for high cholesterol. It's very early-stage research that has been tried in only a few dozen people so far. But gene-editing approaches being developed by two companies show hints that switching off certain genes could dramatically reduce artery-clogging cholesterol. It will take far longer and larger studies to prove. Still, researchers say it raises hope of one day being able to prevent heart attacks without having to take pills.

About 100 monks and nuns join them in Washington, along with silent supporters and thousands watching online. Their leader urges daily mindfulness and a “peaceful day” practice. One... A 16-year-old boy under investigation in a Carnival Cruise ship killing appeared in federal court last week, but the case is being kept secret. On Friday, the boy showed up at a Miami courthouse wearing a ball cap and a camouflage hoodie that was pulled tightly around his face. The court docket gives no details about his appearance because juvenile cases are usually closed. The boy's 18-year-old stepsister, Anna Kepner was found dead under a bed on the ship last November, and her death was ruled a homicide. Читать дальше...

Attorney General Pam Bondi launched into a wide-ranging, passionate defense of President Donald Trump, repeatedly shouting at Democrats during a combative hearing in which she postured herself as the Republican’s chief protector. Bondi's remarks came at a House Judiciary Committee hearing as she tried to turn the page from persistent criticism of the Justice Department’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files. Bondi sought to deflect from criticism of the Epstein files in an extraordinary speech in which she mocked her Democratic questioners... Читать дальше...

U.S. employers added a surprisingly strong 130,000 jobs last month, but government revisions cut 2024-2025 U.S. payrolls by hundreds of thousands. The Labor Department said Wednesday that the unemployment rate fell to 4.3%. The report included major revisions that reduced the number of jobs created last year to just 181,000, weakest since the pandemic year of 2020, and less than half the previously reported 584,000. The job market has been sluggish for months even though the economy is registering solid growth.
Authorities investigating the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie detained a man in Arizona who says he was questioned for hours Tuesday night before being released. The man told several media outlets that he had nothing to do with last week’s disappearance of Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie. The development came just hours after the FBI released images of a masked person on Nancy Guthrie’s porch the night she went missing near Tucson. Authorities have not said what... Читать дальше...

Russia's top diplomat says that Moscow will observe the limits of the last nuclear arms pact with the United States that expired last week as long as it sees that Washington does the same. The New START treaty expired Feb. 5, leaving no restrictions on the two largest atomic arsenals for the first time in more than a half-century and fueling fears of an unconstrained nuclear arms race. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Wednesday that even though the U.S. hasn’t responded to President Vladimir... Читать дальше...
