The outpouring of joy from families comes the day after Cuba’s government said it was going to release 2,010 prisoners in what it said was “humanitarian gestures” ahead of Holy Week. The release comes as the Cuban government has faced extreme pressure and a crippling oil blockade by the Trump administration, which has openly expressed the desire for regime change and the release of prisoners arrested for protesting.

Efforts to quickly and quietly oust the president of the University of Wisconsin system are drawing fire from a Republican legislative leader. Rep. David Murphy said Friday that he was “troubled” that the board of regents is threatening to fire Jay Rothman without any explanation. Rothman said in letters to regents obtained by The Associated Press on Thursday that they were trying to force him to resign or face being fired without explanation. A pod of orcas that had not been recorded in Seattle before is delighting whale watchers with several visits just off downtown. Shari Tarantino of the Washington-based Orca Conservancy said the pod was first spotted off Vancouver, British Columbia, in March. After some digging, researchers matched them with a pod seen in Alaska last year. They have been designated the identifiers of T419, T420 and T421. Tarantino says they may be here cruising for food as the sea mammal population in the Salish Sea is healthy.

The Supreme Court's spokeswoman says Justice Samuel Alito fell ill at an event in Philadelphia last month and was treated for dehydration before returning home to suburban Washington. Spokeswoman Patricia McCabe said in a statement Friday that Alito’s illness did not require an overnight hospital stay and he was back on the bench the following Monday. Historic preservation grants are helping a rural South Dakota church restore vibrant stained glass windows that decorate its century-old sanctuary. Canton Lutheran Church found out in the days before Easter that the South Dakota State Historical Society and city of Deadwood are granting it $22,500 from gaming proceeds for the project. Canton Lutheran also recently received a grant of more than $185,000 from the National Trust for Sacred Places. That's in addition to community fundraising. An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 has rattled parts of northern and eastern Afghanistan and western Pakistan. The spokesperson for Kabul's governor says at least eight people are dead. The quake's epicenter was in the Hindu Kush mountain range, about 150 kilometers east of Kunduz. The Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center and the United States Geological Survey report the quake's depth at over 180 kilometers. State police troopers came to the rescue of a bear cub found in a ditch along the side of a major interstate highway in northern New Jersey. Troopers from the Perryville station responded shortly before 1:40 p.m. Wednesday to milepost 12.2 on I-78 eastbound in Union Township. Officials say the animal was by itself in the ditch and was in need of assistance. The Las Vegas Review-Journal will no longer print its rival the Las Vegas Sun for the first time in decades, bringing to a head a longtime dispute between the southern Nevada newspapers. The papers will be in court Friday, and the Sun hopes a judge will order printing to immediately resume. The papers have the last joint operating agreement that required the Review-Journal to print the Sun as an insert. The Swedish Coast Guard has boarded a tanker suspected of causing an oil spill on the Baltic Sea. The vessel, Flora 1, is under European Union sanctions for transporting Russian oil. The spill was detected early Thursday east of Gotland island. The Coast Guard boarded the vessel early Friday and took it to anchorage near Ysted in southern Sweden. The vessel's flag and destination remain unclear. The EU sanctioned the vessel for carrying Russian oil using irregular and high-risk practices, including turning off location systems.
